QuoteCole Hamels outlasted Dickey in a matchup of All-Stars that fizzled from the start. Hounded by recent trade rumors, Hamels pitched seven gritty innings and had two hits. But the Phillies' suspect bullpen couldn't finish off the win after beating the Mets on Wednesday night.

Also, for anyone who wants to see Howard's debut, my tickets are now listed on StubHub for less than half of face value.

Disgusting farging losers.

Thanks to Juan Samuel too - sent Fontenot for no reason

THAT, was farging pathetic.  Frenchy wasn't even 3/4 of the way to third when Hairston fielded the ball.  I know Hairston has a weak arm but my god what a bad move by Samuel.

yeah it definitely wasnt the highest paid closer in mlb historys fault

small picture: i said it the day it farging happened and no one would listen...just an embarrassingly bad deal smug gave him...romey actually steadfastly defended it...in one sense not surprising because every time a philly team signs someone its a great move and eveytime they lose someone the other team overpaid but still to defend this deal is just stupifying

big picture: last night will always be the night that the torch was officially passed from the phils to the nationals....nats score two in the bottom of the 9th to win and the phillies give up two in the bottom of the ninth to lose

Back breaker. They have to win every game that close to make anything out of this season. Embarrassing.

lol you cant possibly think this has anything to do with last nights game can...only you guys would think so small

its the same reaction as before he ever threw a pitch for the phillies

a five year 50+ million dollar deal to a closer who is going to give you what ryan madson gave you the previous year was about as dumb a deal as you could possibly throw out there considering their circumstances

compare this philosophy to the fact that pat gillick wouldnt even give starters five years...and you give paplebon the biggest contract EVER at his position?

puke

what a piece of shtein win for the mets.  the guy after the hit batter was out on strike 3 that wasn't called.  the lucky hit to tie the game and then wrights bloop piece of shtein to win it.  lucky queers.

they win 7 of 10 coming out of the allstar break.  beleeeeeeeeeeee dat.

We've been over this before.

They traded Lidge's closer slot moneywise for Papelbon's.  It's no more complex than that.  They're not losing because of Papelbon.

you are right they are not....they are losing because they are old and broken down...but thats a huge part of the reason why giving out a five year monster deal to a closer was epically dumb

also lol at slotting salaries on a baseball team....lidge had to be replaced at the same amount of money??...that is so ignorant especially when you consider lidge was not the closer last year...why did you have to pay a closer 50+ mil over 5 years because lidge left?

couldnt lidges and madsons combined 18 million been filled by a combination of offense and bullpen (both closer and set up)...the shortsightedness on all aspects of paplebons deal both by fans and smug is just staggering....or maybe it isnt...maybe this is the downside of success....the front office gets a diluted sense of self worth and the fanbase thinks the team can do no wrong

They're old and broken according to you so pretty much nothing could have been done to save this season.  Again, according to you.

well lets see what happens next year...if they come back and paplebon is on his knees hugging chooch in late october 2013 then my direction of the team will have been way off

if i am the gm though i sell like a motherfarger this year and start the rebuilding rather than the highly unlikely chance that you win a world series in the coming years with the team that much older...because every year you try and hold onto the past you are setting your team back two/three years further into the future...

admittedly this is not an easy thing to do for the sitting gm because by selling you are admitting you farged up....but you have to be progressive

but as for paplebon the contract was stupid even if you dont think this current teams world series years are over.....it just looks much worse if you think they are done

SunMo

do you ever see the yankees or red sox sell?

the phillies are in the same position money wise, especially with their tv deal coming up soon.  they need to start acting like a big money team and retool, not rebuild.

Exactly, Sunny.

I wouldn't mind them selling a piece here or there but not for "prospects".  If they get major league ready talent I'm fine with that.
