the thome move is 1000% defensible. it was only a mil, he was coming off an alright season and you needed some power off the bench.

a hitter off the bench is something they can find anywhere, and they can simply DFA thome and it wont do any damage.

the other moves (wiggerton, AAAberry, signing polanco 3 years ago, trading lee the first time around, papelboner, not having a reasonable 2B option besides galvis, giving schneider another year, the blanton extension) all deserve to get killed. 

for example they could have signed beltre 2 offseasons ago but instead went with polly. rube couldnt see the future, couldnt see that utley and howard would crack, that werth would walk, etc. then this year, cuddyer and ross and willingham are out there and he goes with farging wiggerton and nix. god damnit.

im not sure how a move is defensible when the guy they signed should be retired...but if you can find a way for it then more power to you

no one is saying signing thome cost them the season or matters that much...just that he shouldnt be on a major league roster right now

the fact that thome shouldnt be on the roster is one thing....even picking thome to pinch hit the other night for clifton was fine.....a sac fly puts them in front...shtein a homer gives them a two run lead......who better to put in that spot than the guy with 600 plus homers....the problem came when the giants went with javier lopez...one of the ultimate loogys and a guy thats dominates the phils....oh and a guy who owns lefties in general....but against all those odds chuckles left mayberry a guy who kills lefties on the bench...and also polly a rh bat who makes contact

AAAberry would have been a terrible play (he sucks). polly was the right play there.

in fact i would have considered squeezing there. even with thome. last thing they would have expected. thats when you do it. but charlie never thinks of anyway to score a farging run other than the 3 run homer. and hes especially going to be thinking that with his washed up over the hill son up.
