The Offensive Line

Since it's become an unfortunate focal point this year, why not have a thread dedicated to it.

I was reading on PhilaPhans where someone heard SalPal saying that he was told that McGlynn is clueless when it comes to making the line calls and it was so bad on Sunday that Nick Cole had to make the calls in the second half.

So if that is true, then the hope of Reggie Wells taking over at RG is slim because Cole isn't the greatest C. Unless they'd be willing to shift Cole back over knowing that with Vick back there he has escapability.

Peters gets rolled up every other play
Herremans has a bum foot and could explode at any moment
Mike McGlynn apparently can't make the protection calls
Nick Cole is serviceable as a backup G, but can't really handle C
Winston Justice is average, and average on this OL means all-pro

Reggie Wells is a veteran who could help, but at whose expense?

MJG is nothing more than a backup.

For a head coach who loves to throw it 40 times a game and who used to be an offensive lineman and offensive line coach AND who was planning on starting a young buck QB he sure farged this situation up, didn't he?

Don Ho

This may be the year I will actually celebrate if they pick a lineman in round one.    One that doesn't hear little voices in his head.

Preparing this week has been easier knowing, instead of wondering whether, he would play, McGlynn said.

"Now it's like, 'All right, you're the guy.' You don't have to worry about that element of the unknown," he said.

Jackson, after coming back quickly from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, suffered a torn triceps Sunday against the Green Bay Packers and was lost for the season.

Guard Todd Herremans described McGlynn as "a student of the game."

"He's always trying to find something to beat our protection," Herremans said. "He's full of 'what ifs' in the film room, which is always a good thing because it means his mind is working at possibilities of things we could see."

mcglynn can have the brains of john nash all he wants, it still wont help the fact that he'll get bulldozed over 3/4 of the time

smeags

that's ok though, cause now reid has a qb that can scramble.

McGlynn would be fine if Nick Cole was worth a damn. A center is only as good as his guards are assuming he handles the snap correctly...which McGlynn did.

PhillyPhreak54

So then they should put Cole on the bench and start the guy they gave up a precious draft pick for.

ice grillin you

whats hilarious is that this upcoming draft is one of the weakest in a while for lineman...things will change of course but right now there might be two or three OL total ranked in the top 20....and theres no "cant miss" stud types anywhere...the top lineman is i believe castonzo and hes bottom of the top ten

to put it perspective its been over five years since an OT has not gone in the top 5

Watching McGlynn play he seems to be fairly solid.  Cole is terrible, I don't know what the team sees in him.  Peters is pretty much a bust.  Herremans and Justice are ok.

QuoteMike McGlynn, though, seemed to take a little offense.

"I don't understand that either," McGlynn said. "I don't know how we're taking the heat for the quarterback switch either. Mike [Vick] went in there and did a lot of good things. To say OK, we're going to switch the quarterback because of the offensive line, I don't understand that."

A reporter told McGlynn that the perception was Vick could scramble and get away from pressure better than Kolb.

"I disagree. I don't think it has anything to do with us," McGlynn said. "Like I said, we gave up some sacks last week, but there's a lot of variables. One was on a screen, there's a lot of variables. And people just look at OK, they gave up six sacks, they're terrible. No, you watch the film. Watch the film and then you guys can critique us then."
