If the rotation stays intact and in this order until the Astros come to town, Oswalt would be the one starter they wouldn't see.

They have three off days in August, though, so I'm thinking we may see Blanton or Kendrick skipped once to prevent that from happening.

world series or bust would have meant trading for roy halladay and keeping cliff lee

i would say this trade was a try to save face or bust

I don't think this trade has anything to do with saving face.  They got a quality starter for basically table scraps.

phillies will be under 500 this year...book it

ice grillin you

wasnt table scraps

out of the four deals:

lee I
halladay
lee II
oswalt

it is right there with the halladay deal as the best package...not that any of them were monster looks but they gave up a decent amount...what puts this deal over the top is what they didnt have to give up and the money aspect

but the bottom line is the trade wouldnt have had to been made had they not farged up big time by doing lee II

Rome

lol at houston's game logs when oswalt pitched:

the most runs they scored in any game is 5.  in 17 out of 20 starts they scored 4 runs or less for the guy.

that's freaking abysmal.

I think the point was that they got Oswalt for table scraps because it was good value, not because they were desperate to save face.

Also, I would rank the packages:

Halladay (included a top prospect in Drabek)
Lee I
Oswalt (Happ has more value than any of the guys in the Seattle deal)
Lee II (just an awful deal that was rushed for no reason)

line-up

Rollins 6, Polanco 4, Ibanez 7, Howard 3, Werth 8, Brown 9, Dobbs 5, Ruiz 2, Oswalt 1

the phillies should have just kept ryne sandberg.

and the birds should have drafted Joe Montana.

Worst trade ever.  Oswalt will probably be going to the DL now.
