Ted Kennedy's N.F.L. Prospects

After nearly 50 years of public service, there wasn't much about Senator Edward M. Kennedy's career that was not widely known. Until Saturday. In a moving remembrance at his father's funeral, the senator's son, Ted Jr., mentioned that the Green Bay Packers were interested in Kennedy when he graduated from Harvard in 1956.

Late in 1955, Packers Coach Lisle Blackbourn (he coached the Packers until 1957; Vince Lombardi took over in 1959 after a disastrous 1-10-1 season with Ray McLean as coach) sent Kennedy, who played what was then called right end — he wore No. 88 and was essentially a receiver — a letter.

"You have been very highly recommended to us by a number of coaches in your area and also by our talent scouts as a possible pro prospect," Blackbourn wrote to Kennedy, according to Kennedy's senate Web site.

Apparently those famous touch football games with his brothers at Hyannis Port were enough for Kennedy. He declined the offer, telling Blackbourn he planned to go to law school and "go into another contact sport, politics."
