Just going on my gut feeling so far, but I don't think there is much sophistication to the algorithms, just pure randomness with a lot of variability.  I think you just were lucky, Sarge.

I'm thinking the same but it never hurts to try it again.  I'll go with the same tactic tomorrow and see how it works out.

I think it's the same for scavenging.  No matter how many steps you take at a time, the odds that any particular step will turn out any particular way are the same.

Any word on the benefit of melee weapons?

it depends how you get attacked. if you get attacked with a melee, then you have to use melee. if you get attacked with a gun, then you use your gun

Interesting.  I'm willing to bet that a lot of people dump their melee weapons as they advance in the game.  Time to save up for a katana.

Holy shtein, I just put bugaboo's bitch in the hospital but my fight log had 1835 steps in it.  The first hit wasn't landed until #74.  There was a lot of swinging and missing going on in this thing and so I can only imagine his guard is incredible.  When it was all said and done though I still had 455 health points left so he barely did anything to me in our fight.  But he was a pain in the ass to take down.

I just fought him, too.

2009 steps to our battle.  In the end, I lost 5% health.

I dropped another 25k into the gang fund but I may need to tap it for some funds later on.  Gonna try and come up with the scratch on my own for the katana but I might need a little help with it.
