QuotePhillies acquire Branyan from Indians
August 9, 2007

PHILADELPHIA (TICKER) -- The Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday acquired utility man Russell Branyan from the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations.

Branyan, 31, began the season with the San Diego Padres and hit .197 with seven home runs and 19 RBI in 61 games before being released on July 28. He was signed by the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday and assigned to Class AAA Buffalo, where he appeared in one game.

A lefthanded hitter, Branyan has a career average of .229 with 118 home runs and 293 RBI in 688 games for the Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Padres.

The Phillies will make a corresponding roster move prior to Thursday's game against the Florida Marlins.

Years ago he was a hot prospect. He has some power and we gave up nothing.

probably geary

Branyan was one of Charlie's guys in Cleveland.  He's a better LH option off the bench than Nunez, but that's about it...

ice grillin you

no hes not...cause nunez is a very good fielder...and branyan isnt even a better hitter...he provides more pop than nunez off the bench...but thats if he can connect with the ball

doesnt much matter hes gone as soon as victorino and or utley comes off the dl

If he makes contact the ball can leave the yard in that little league field. whatever, its a non-issue move. hes a better pinch hitter than rod barajas or abraham nunez, so he wins.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

ice grillin you

no hes not a better pinch hitter than nunez...to be a good hitter you have to actually be able to hit the ball...hes a .225 career hitter with almost double the amount of strikeouts to hits...thats as bad as it gets...

plus abe is a switch hitter
