Yeah, that was the only choice, Gillick...or Ed Wade. No one else.

please name someone available at the time that you would rather have.
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

Yeah, I can't think of any other established GM's that were available.  Maybe there are/were a few guys available who are ready to take on a GM role but do you want to put the immediate future of a team that has some real quality talent on it in the hands of a rookie GM?

SD_Eagle5

The Sabremetrics Jew Epstein from the Sox was available.

SunMo

the only other guy out there was Jerry Hunsicker, he ended up going to Tampa Bay to be an adviser of some sort.

bottom line is they have a GM that won two championships and built good teams every where he went.  to call him a fraud is incorrect.

ice grillin you

you can have it both ways

you can say he was the right hire at the time

and also say now that unless he pulls a few rabbits out of his hat hes cost them the season this year by completely ignoring the bullpen and putting a team on the field that cant catch the ball
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

im the board pharmacist....always one step above yous

Wingspan

I wanted Gerry Hunsicker.

I was ok with Gillick too, at the time...but it has become apparent that after the 2005-06 offseason, and then the 2006-07 offseason, that Gillick just doesnt seem to have a grasp on what this team needs.

Everyone and their mother knew the bullpen needed work this offseason...and Alfonseca is the only notable aquisition?

Gillick does an OK job, considering the ownership.  It's not his fault all the players are whiny douche assfaces.

SunMo

as GM:

Toronto (1978-1994)
5 division titles
2 WS wins

Baltimore (1995-1998)
2 playoff appearances

Seattle (1999-2003)
2 playoff appearances
116 wins in 2001

each one of those teams has turned to shtein once he left

sounds like a fraud to me.

overall, he's done a pretty good job considering what he had to work with after Wade.  i don't know what you can do about the fielding though, you can't take Utely or Howard out of the lineup, and you don't get enough production from the outfield to be able to put a good fielder at 3rd instead of Helms

when didnt stank ass wes helms become an offensive force...hes had like 20 homers and 90 rbi in the last THREE YEARS...burrell is the guy youd keep in the lineup for offensive numbers above fielding....not friggin wes helms...he stinks offensively and especially defensively

Baltimore was a decent team before gillick got there. +.500 records in 1992, 1993, 1994 (before the strike), and finished behind the Blue Jays for the division both years.

Seattle also won the division two of the three seasons before Gillick got there.

He started with the Blue jays when they were an expansion team, working his way up the ranks, where they did win two world series.

What difference does it make that they went to shtein after he left? Does being replaced by incompetent make the predesessor less or more (in)competent, that's the equivilant of saying Dick Vermeil did nothing, because Marion Campbell did nothing.

Gillick has not done anything to signifigantly improve the phillies over two offseasons now, how much longer is there to wait before he can be held accountible?
