Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia - it is not an authoritative source, nor was it ever intended to be.  This is why articles which do not cite their sources get flagged and possibly deleted.  You weren't allowed to cite The World Book Encyclopedia after 6th grade, you shouldn't be able to cite Wikipedia either.
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

FS64, that's going on in the middle schools as well.

I love Wikipedia, but it just cannot be couned on as a good source for a formal paper because of it's accessibility to just about anyone to change or add material.

Pretty much, except that the World Book is at least cross-checked for accuracy.  Wikipedia, for all its accessibility, cannot be as accurate due to the transient nature of the internet and the wiki interface.

I would prefer World Book a thousand times over Wikipedia for a formal paper.
