Ernie "Big Cat" Ladd, an imposing professional football player and battler for rights of African-American athletes, died in San Diego at the age of 68.

Ladd died Saturday of cancer.

He was the 15th player taken in the 1961 American Football League draft and played for the San Diego Chargers, Houston Oilers and Kansas City Chiefs. After his football career ended, Ladd made a name for himself on the professional wrestling circuit.

Ladd led many of the fights for equal rights for African-American football players.

He was inducted into both the American Football League Hall of Fame and World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame.
