i dont know every square inch of the district and you certainly know it better than me so i guess some is "backwoods"...is maybe the northwest part of the district?

but isnt the area outside charlottesville more suburban than rural...also culpepper which i think the district includes is pretty much a dc suburb....really the whole 95 corridor btwn dc and richmond is almost one big suburb

my point is that the district isnt southwest virgina coal country or something along those lines

Culpeper's population is pretty small, but yes I guess that would be suburban. Literally everything between Henrico county and Culpeper is rural as farg. And you can see a pretty clear attempt to avoid the immediate Charlottesville area in the way the district was drawn.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

I was recently down that way, in Orange, and I can unequivocally pronounce the area to be rural and conservative.  Memorial day in that area is essentially a day to commemorate the slaver's army heroes, who trudged back and forth through there, soaking the land with blood.

its clearly very conservative and rural in parts....but its also pretty well educated and fairly wealthy

my suprise isnt that they are voting conservative its that they seemed overly obsessed with illegal immigration...this is something you would normally see in the middle of a mississippi swamp or a mountain town in idaho

Look, my district is pretty reliably conservative so there's totally a chance that this guy will win the general election, but there's strong evidence that a lot of Dems showed up to vote against Cantor yesterday and that this isn't some right-wing rebellion. The turnout was somehow 18,000 higher than the Republican primary in 2012, almost a 40% increase. That's pretty fishy in my opinion. People are trying to paint this as an anti-immigration thing, but the latest PPPoll showed that the district actually supports bipartisan immigration reform by a huge margin.

Maybe this guy will get coached up or maybe it just won't matter in a conservative district, but I think that as long as the Democratic candidate isn't a complete assclown this district is very much a tossup now.
.  Exactly.  The national media is making this a referendum on immigration but it wasn't.  Between the Dems voting and the general dissatisfaction with incumbents, Cantor was going down.  He did not bring home the bacon and was not involved at home.  He was focused on becoming speaker.  Dio, he wasn't a good old boy but was a Jew.

So IGY, who are you looking at for Gov?  Dio?

Sounds like Brown has the Democratic spot locked up at this point according to the WP

Gansler seems like a good enough character, just a bit right on a few things.  Heather Mizeur completely shocked me the other night running an ad saying she wants to legalize weed to fund schools and other projects.  Kinda like the balls on her.

I'm unhappy with politics in Maryland.  While I love the major movements toward a more progressive government--dropping capital punishment, enshrining marriage equality in law, implementation of the (sadly watered-down) Maryland Dream Act, environment restrictions, etc.--I am on the whole dissatisfied with the State Government.  It is essentially an old school, Southern-style political machine, only with a progressive bent rather than a regressive one.  The Republicans have so little power as to be almost literally meaningless.  The result is a stale system that has a very monolithic aspect.

A true liberal in Maryland has about as much voice in the Democratic party as a Republican does.  In this primary election, for example, the differences between Brown and Gansler are trumped up; they will govern from essentially the same exact platform.   Whichever of them wins--my money is on Brown, lightweight that he is--will tow the National Democratic party line.  Meanwhile, Mizeur, who actually knows what's up on everything from prisons to pot, has no farging chance.

Seeing all of this when I moved back long ago, I registered Republican.  But don't get it twisted: though I'd like for the Dems in power to be challenged, I'm not going to go so far as to actually help the Republicans do it.  They are on their own in that regard.  In fact, I registered with them as a way to snub and farg with both parties.

At the Republican primary, I'll vote for the most extreme fargwit that makes the ballot.  With any luck, he'll do well enough to confuse and mislead the evil Republican bosses.  Not that it matters who they put up because whoever the Republicans put up will lose.  Well, until they change their party to reflect modern life and problems anyway.  Plus, being registered Republican, I get these awesome mailings from Conservative whackos, the State Party (which is basically bankrupt, so I really enjoy sending their SASE back empty), and calls from Rasumssen polling.  I enjoy the chance to farg with their numbers, as little effect as it actually has.

At general election, I will write in Mizeur and vote Green or Independent down the ballot.  None of the established players will get my vote.

Interesting view points.  I'd probably go with Gansler if it was just a choice between Brown or Gansler.  Mizeur doesnt have much of a shot, but i'll throw my vote her way because I appreciate the outside of the box thinking.  I have no clue who's running on the Republican side other than Lollar who is for abolishing the state sales tax.
