It's a weird feeling to have a strong inclination towards federalism in most instances, to have argued that the ACA was an unconstitutional expansion of the Commerce Clause, to want a reduction in expenditures and entitlement reform....

....and to sit here and violently hate the Republican party and think they're farging insane.

I think it makes me angrier than if I was just a lock-step Democrat because as the article rjs' linked explains, I do believe there's a place for "a strong, rational, positive, practical conservative movement. It needs that bulwark against liberal delusion and hubris. It needs a voice that says we are imperfect, that life is complex, that government can create need even as it meets need, that you can't fix everything and freedom is worth some danger and sorrow."  And I want there to be that voice because I disagree with about 40% of the Democrat platform, and yet I will never in a million years vote for the current incarnation of the Right because of what it represents and what it has turned into.  The fact that they have completely destroyed what should be a reasonable alternative on some issues is infuriating.

I notice you left out the part that said: "And there are smart, honest conservatives at the ready to be that voice, to help govern practically and sincerely with that voice, but they are drowned out by the guttural scream of craven utopians raging against reality".  I obviously disagree with the fake cries of the left wishing good for the GOP.  This country would be screwed if McCain was elected and no doubt we would be fighting a war in Syria.  Let's just face the fact that Hillary is going to be the next president and not spend the millions for a fake election.  Big business always wants to back a winner so I suspect we will see the money start flowing to the Dem coffers for 2014 soon.

"McAuliffe hauled in more than $6.2 million in September and began October with nearly $1.9 million in the bank, according to his filing with the State Board of Elections, which was published by the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan tracker of money in politics.

By comparison, Cuccinelli raised $3.4 million in September and began October with roughly $1 million on hand, according to a release from his campaign.

Libertarian Party candidate Robert Sarvis raised $27,234 in September and had $21,997 on hand as of Oct. 1."

Seems Rusty's smart friend won't be winning this one although he will have my vote.  These elections are already bought and paid for.

I could've just quoted the whole article.   There are plenty of smart conservatives.  The problem I have is some of the fringe ideological beliefs seem to drive policy these days.  They exist on the left too but they're still the fringe and not as close to party platforms.

to me this is why it's important to stay in the party ... to try and keep the fringe from getting an even louder voice and hopefully get them out of office.

the republican party right now is a living, breathing parody itself.

Live in the South for a while and then tell me you want a vibrant conservative movement.

I want NOTHING of the sort, thanks.

I live in Alabama.  My idea of a vibrant conservative movement and what someone in the sticks in Alabama considers conservative aren't the same things.
