All great points aboutt his guy, but does anyone else have any concerns with Obama's answer to "spread the wealth"?

rjs246

Yes, I have concerns about it. But the gap between the rich and the poor has been expanding at a really scary rate over the past decade or so and frankly that concerns me more.

The current economical environment, which favors lax regulation enforcement and lax anti-monopoly laws, leads to less small businesses being able to compete. This leads to less people starting small businesses which, in turn, leads to a larger gap in wealth. The rich face less competition and get richer. The phrase 'spreading the wealth' is a bad one, but the reality is that massive corporations run everything in our economy and leveling the playing field is the only way fix the disproportional gap in wealth.

You know what? We already "spread the wealth". The higher your tax bracket the higher precentage of taxes you pay. Fact. It is how it works now. Obama is adjusting that but he is by no means creating it. People are talking about this issue like we have a flat tax system.

If what Obama is doing is "socialist" then guess what folks. We're already socialists because it is how it works now. He's merely adjusting the existing brackets down a bit and tacking on 1% or 2% to folks who make over $250K . Really he could state his case better on that front. He's letting them define his position as wealth distribution when in fact it's already there. It's how the tax code works.

It should also be noted that massive corporations employ a ton of people and simply taxing the crap out of them is not exactly a recipe for economic turnaround.

Both corporate taxation and protectionism are basically empty campaign talking points that would be shot down quickly in any time of economic downturn.  Jobs and trade are kind of important like that.

Again, a balance between trickle-down and trickle-up needs to be found to make it work.  People need to remember that the burdens of taxes are independent of their economic incidences over time, so the most important thing is what the government is doing with tax money.  Obama has recently started talking of a full-scale review of our government to cut pieces that aren't working and invest in those that do, and that's the most important piece of his plan.

Thats where I think Obama is being short sighted by saying how he's going to tax companies more. Well the share/stake holders of that company is not going to like a smaller bottom line, so the people who's taxes were spared, will have their jobs cut.

Right, and he knows that.  It's just a play to people who don't know better and proof that Republicans don't have the unintelligent voter market cornered by a longshot.

Funny the last president to review the government and cut waste was a democrat too. Didn't Clinton do that in the 90's?

To clarify, I'm not suggesting blindly 'taxing the crap' out of big companies. I'm talking about enforcing laws and regulations that are already in place and closing loopholes. No laws really need to be touched.

No doubt. This is huge.

The loopholes were put into the laws and regulations in place. Those loopholes are never accidentally left open.

Along with our Tax Code it is the primary source of funding for our "trusted public servants"

Fair enough. The laws would have to be changed to close loopholes. But in essence, the same laws would be in place. WHATEVER.

"closing loopholes" is to increasing taxes and regulations
as
"fixing the glitch" is to firing Milton Waddams
