They do and that is when regulation steps in to muck things up.... see the AT&T breakup fiasco of the 80's...

Anti-monopoly laws worked for a long time but are clearly no longer effective. Massive companies have gotten so much better at streamlining processes and production than their minor competitors that the gap isn't protectable by reasonable laws (which is why we get these ridiculous ideas about forcing huge companies to redistribute their wealth). Add to that the fact that big business has the entire political system in its pocket and what we have is a slew of industries that are on the verge of becoming entirely monopolistic and no way to stop it.

While oil profits are obscene, their profit margins are below the economic average.  Of course, I'd rather be making a smaller percentage on hundreds of billion in revenue a quarter than a large percentage of hundreds of millions.  Still, any one company that can profit >$15B a year while causing an economic headache (and possible recession) should most certainly be reigned in.  Which is where I have a pull between two ideals - less government regulation good, but dangerous greed is bad.

That's a no shtein right there!

Maybe there's a way for the government to fix what's wrong with the oil market instead of regulating and taxing the companies. Problem is that it's a global market and not just a US market.

That's why there is so much talk about oil speculators - trading in oil futures like dot com stocks.
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

How many El Ninos can you buy with $10?  Probably less than 2.

Should we make it $20?

At least he likes woman and not men or boys like some GOP figures over the last few years. While I thought Kerry/Edwards would be a disaster at the time I think we've came out about even. We were farged no matter who got elected.
