I wouldn't worry about it too much.  The insurance and drug lobbies are too powerful to allow pure Socialism in healthcare.  And when it comes down to it, shouldn't somewhat adequate healthcare be universal?

I'm obviously of the mind that you should be able to get what you pay for in health care as well as most other facets of the economy and life... but the way care is provided (or not) to some people in this country is atrocious and should certainly be addressed.

It's just like tax reform, social security, or campaign financing, though.  Does anything major ever really get done?  Nope.  All of the candidates that stand a remote chance are part of the same establishment and the same problem.  Don't fool yourself into thinking it matters all that much.

Dude, you're smoking crack if you think the drug lobbies are that powerful.  Hard to be effective when you've been villified so bad in the public.  The real problem with health care is the insurance companies and tort lawyers, and one of those is running for president.  Hillary = moving to Thailand to find work.
Anyone but Reid.

PoopyfaceMcGee

Nothing that severe would ever happen.

Plus, being villified doesn't mean they don't have plenty of politicians on the Hill bought and in their pockets.

Hey, I'm the absolute opposite of a Socialist.  But, if you live in a majority-rules society, you have to learn to live with the majority... which are mostly idiots.

If the idea of the government taking care of everything is appealing to the majority of people, we'll start to move toward Socialism in this country.  If it gets bad enough, there are other countries.  But ultimately, none of that would ever happen, because the ideas pronounced in campaigns always end up getting watered down, and the Republicans and Democrats in Washington aren't nearly as different as they'd like to think.

So, vote Hillary.  Let's see how it turns out.

Some things should be socialized or a least quasi-socialized.  Europe doesn't seem to have a problem with government healthcare, and they are starting to beat the US in just about every quality of living category you can think of.

I am fascinated by the "Socialism" argument put forth by those on the right.  Most of the GOP right now is made up of people who agree with their domestic agenda (tough on crime, anti-abortion, pro-death penalty, war on terror, pro-guns, etc.).  What these people don't realise is that Socialism would probably work out pretty well for them.  Whats the average income in the US for a family of 4?  60k?  50k?  Why the hell does the American public allow the uber-rich to not pay at least 50% of their income in taxes?  The powers that be on both sides like to have people in the 0-250k range fight over taxes while the millionaires and billionaires laugh at us.

We have a social security system that will default within the next fifteen years, yet the salary cap remains at 97,500.  Why?  We have deficits that my great-grandkids won't be able to pay off yet we have people spending 300-400k on cars.

The whole thing is farging pathetic at this point, and neither party will fix it.  Washington DC is the largest red-light district in the world...all of our elected officials are nothing but whores for their corporate and special interest masters.
I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too,
I had my pointless point of view,
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right.

I have no problem with the idea of socialized medicine.  I'm all for allowing all people access to medical care without having to mortgage their future.

My fear with socialized medicine are two fold:

1.  The astronomical costs - partially because of the litigious society that sues over every minor thing, and partially because of the largesse of the medical/insurance/pharmaceutical industries.  The government simply taking over the costs of the system without a major overhaul will cause a huge tax increase for all working Americans.

2.  The idea of trusting this government with running anything frankly scares me.

So while in theory I agree, there needs to be a concurrent complete overhaul of the whole system:  tort reform to bring sanity (not cutting off completely for true cases, but limiting damages - especially lawyers fees) to bring the costs down to a reasonable level.

Yeah, yeah, I know:  pie in the sky.
