It is a position of such great influence, power, and importance, that the fact we pay it so little is comic.

I'm not sure I would call it comic, but this sums up my frustration perfectly.

It's either comedy or tragedy.  I'm tired of being miserable, so I go for the former lately.

Cliffs notes;

1. Teachers need to be paid more
2. Schools desperately need to be better equipped
3. Kids are stupid these days. People in this country wonder why other countries school systems are leaping ahead? Look no further than the curriculum being taught. Like I said earlier, I was amazed to see the college text books that I use having to put simple words like "critique" in the margin with definitions.

The curriculum is the effect, not the cause.  The cause is lack of educational discipline and grade inflation.  It seems that the only role parents want to have in education these days is bitching out teachers who are out to ruin their kids lives by giving them low grades.  (The concept of "earning" a grade seems completely lost)

You can't legislate parenting, but there are programs and incentives that could be created to encourage parents.  It is not easy, but it can be done.  Here's an idea freshly pulled out of my ass: create a parenting certification which is required to claim the dependent child tax credit.  Classes and testing are government sponsored, and only one parent/guardian in a family unit must be certified to qualify.  The parent must update the certification for the different age ranges as the child ages.

If you don't like taxes, make it a college fund that is increased with each completed level of certification.  The point isn't that I think this plan is the solution, but just an example of how the government could intervene to improve parenting.

An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

Back on topic, here's a republican candidate who wouldn't make me throw up if elected.  Of course, he's more of a Libertarian than a republican, which is probably why I think he's OK.  Not perfect, but not bad for a republican.

I think it's hilarious that the two numbskulls in this thread who are crying so feverishly over teachers salaries aren't even parents themselves.

rjs246

I think it's terrifying that the two numbskulls in this thread who are crying so feverishly against increasing teachers salaries are parents. You're not part of the problem. You ARE the problem.

QuoteIn closing, I wish public schools could be palaces and teachers could be paid a king's ransom, but the fact is they're not and they never will be.  There's finite revenue sources and a huge number of children in public schools and most districts are stretched to the point of no return as it is.

What part of that didn't you understand?

Regardless, you don't give a shtein about this so stop acting all indignant over it, already.

rjs246

Wrong. I care about the future of this country and this society and your little mistakes represent that future. As long as parents are willing to sacrifice their children's education in the name of saving a few buck in taxes this country will continue to fall behind the rest of the modern world in several key areas.

I farging hate ignorance and ignorant people. I care about education because education makes the world a better place. Not just for your semen stains, for everyone.

Unless I'm misreading you, you just referred to my child as a mistake and a semen stain.  If I'm reading your comments incorrectly, I'd appreciate an explanation because I tend to take things like that personally.

rjs246

If I'm reading you correctly you just told me to stop expressing my opinion because I "don't care" about this topic. Clearly I don't appreciate you telling me what I do and do not care about. Lighten up.

Right - me saying to you that you don't give a shtein about something is clearly the same as you referring to my child as a semen stain and a mistake.

You're a class act, rjs, and your thoughts about my child not withstanding, I'm sure your wish for the children of America to be afforded the best education possible is indeed hearfelt.

SunMo

i think i'm going to start referring to all kids as "semen stains"...in some cases it actually sounds better.

for example:  "I'd like to rape that little semen stain"

I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.
