Illegal immigration is such a phony issue because republicans (rightfully) dgaf generally about protectionist policies in terms of domestic jobs.  Vast majority of macro economists that I've seen indicate that illegal immigration is a net positive for the economy domestically regardless of whether it negatively impacts any American worker.
