Once again, we circle back to today's Dilbert.

I look at it this way. Most methods or principles, like socialism, are tools available to a government. Not every problem requires a free market hammer and not every problem needs a socialist screw driver. Public discourse between parties often turns every issue into a very simple black and white or good verse evil. In truth problems are a lot more subtle then that and require interpretation. When our two party system insists on adopting only one tool to fix every problem we get to where we are today.

Two parties one with a screw driver and one with a hammer. Each is convinced that their tool will fix every problem.

This man deserves a beer.

And "independents" like you and Rome need to admit that you like using a screwdriver as much as possible, ironically keeping the hammer behind a pane of glass reading, "In case of emergency, break glass."

Too far with the analogy?  Yes.  Don't like it?  I'll go see a critic at the Inquirer with a hammer in hand.

I saw a fairly amusing phrase on a church sign today:

Tense about the future?  God is always present!

:-D

PS: Worst analogy ever.  Well done!

I'm not even sure what you're talking about. If you're talking about a tiered taxation system, then yes, I like the use of the 'screwdriver'. I'm all for capitalism, but this country needs to accept the fact that while we may have introduced the world to capitalism, the world has improved upon it largely by incorporating more 'screwdriver' tactics. Like democracy before it, we're so proud of this thing we created that the 'hammer' side of the conversation has become stubbornly unwilling to change or improve upon the original model. Free Market capitalism is doomed to fail.

I just read a study this morning of what independents are looking for, by and large, in today's world. Fiscal responsibility, social progressiveness and a strong military were the top three priorities. All of which fit my outlook perfectly and in fact, it's a much easier designation to define than the platform of either of the major parties.

1. Fiscal responsibility means not blowing through 100s of billions of dollars a year on a war that no one supports and that has no definable end. It also means analyzing and eliminating wasteful government projects. It also means taxing the people.
2. Social progressiveness is self explanatory.
3. A strong military doesn't even require additional work, just continued funding and training. We have a strong military. The strongest in the world. We need to stop inserting ourselves into every situation.

I do not perfer the hammer or screwdriver. They each have their place. Sometimes they need to work together on the same problem. Knowing when and where is most of the battle. If your going to prefer one over the other no matter what and do not even acknowledge the need for the other and label it "evil" we get to where we are today...

My beer of choice today is something dark and Irish.

100% agreement with all of these.

By the way, social progressiveness is FAR from self explanatory but for the purposes of this discussion I'm not gonna get into my feelings on that crap.

A screwdriver...something used to screw a screw into a hole that has been shaped and made to fit said screw perfectly.
A hammer...something used to forcibly make a hole that wasn't there in the first place.

I like these analogies.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

I just met Byron Dorgan and Kay Hagan.  Dorgan's daughter is semi-hot and attends UNC.

Pro McCain Muslims confront some old dude whos handing out Racist flyers/bumper stickers drawing comparisons between Obama/Islam/Socialism:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/20/muslim-mccain-fans-confro_n_136203.html

i dont know what to think of this video. first of all i think its fake. what self respecting muslim would be pro mccain when the campaign has done everything in its power directly and indirectly to alienate the muslim community by trying to demonize obama and his middle name.

if its real then wow. i wonder how that racist dude feels as he walks out of the rally. and i guess the only pro mccain muslims are the ones who are voting for single issues more related to their homelands. the woman said she was kurdish and they are fighting for their independence from iraq. similarly the pakistani muslim community voted in large numbers for bush/cheney in 2000 thinking he would be better for pakistan.

most of these muslim families have their extended family back home. so while the WARS and Violence are just BREAKING NEWS here affecting the families of the soldiers....its real back home and it affects everyone's family daily. my dad has his 8 siblings back home in pakistan and hes on the phone daily asking about everyone since there is a bomb or two going off everyday.

with all that being said i still think the video is fake. but then that begs the question why? did they stage it so well that they actually had someone make the bumper stickers? or was the racist not a part of the plot? and did they really expect the video to be picked up by the internet?

aside from all that the kurdish girl was cute. +1 genetics!
Marge: I have someone who can help you!
Homer: Is it BATMAN!!??
Marge: No hes a scientist
Homer: Batman is a scientist.
Marge: Its not BATMAN!

There is a subset of the population that bucks all social norms and will vote for a party that actively dislikes them based on one (or a few) issues.

Log Cabin Republicans, Racist southern white Democrats, Muslim Republicans (which wouldn't be strange at all if the Right weren't trying so hard to convince everyone that Obama isn't fit to be President simply because he's 'Muslim')... It's pretty fascinating really. I can't imagine how they justify it in conversation.

It does make me feel good to see several people (non-muslims included) go and hand that asswipe his lunch.

I swear to God, and it happens on both sides of the spectrum, these iceholes drive me crazy.  I have a corner lot on a well traveled intersection, and every moron with a campaign sign knocks on my door to put one on my lawn.  To date, not a single one of them could tell me what the platform of the candidate they're pimping is.  So I tell them to farg off and stop wasting my time.  Jesus Christ, if you're going to promote a candidate at least know what they stand for.
Anyone but Reid.
