It's all true.  I think I read about it a while back on his Wikipedia entry.

He came back from Vietnam a very different person and to a very different wife than he was idealizing his whole time there.  There is no doubt that primary motivations were self-serving (marrying into money and to a younger, hotter woman), so any of the justifications of his actions are secondary to first admitting that it was a tasteless move at odds with anyone's sense of chivalry or honor.
