You do know that there are rifles out there that are accurate up to a mile away from it's target, right?  Even a stock M-16 is accurate at 500 yards without a scope.

Firearms are legal. There are very regularly going to be people with rifles within theoretical shooting distance of a president or candidate. I'm not sure what kind of powers you think the secret service has, but your belief that this is some sort of impossible scenario without the help of the government is ludicrous.

Again, you conveniently leave out the parts of someone's argument that actually puts yours to bed.  Anyone who would try to assassinate the President with an M-16 from 500 yards away is a complete moron.

And while the secret service is very aware of this and they do a very thorough job at securing everything within approximately 3 mile radius of where the President will be, the bottom line is that they can make a mistake.  They can miss something. 

Obviously, it's no easy task to pull off.  If it were then I think just about every President in the last 50 years would have been shot.  But to say it's impossible is ignorant and over confident.  And if the Secret Service were to ever claim it's impossible, it would be dangerous.
