The troubling thing in this conversation is that THawk is close to the truth but the conclusion he comes to is absurd. The education system isn't broken because of some conspiracy by the elites to keep everyone dumb. It's broken for all of the exact same reasons that so much of the rest of government seems to be broken.

We live in a two-party political system and one of those parties has been working explicitly to starve, undermine and destroy government programs for decades. They don't even try to hide it so no conspiracy theory is necessary. Programs and entire departments appear not to work because they are intentionally under-funded. This is the GOP's method to weaken programs intentionally and then point to them and say "look! that program isn't working! better hand it over to private industries and billionaires so that we can make money off of the thing that government should be doing!"

The fact that THawk (and significant portions of the population) misunderstand this as a structural issue designed to keep people dumb is frustrating. It isn't about keeping people dumb. It's about handing as much money to private industry as humanly possible by taking money and control away from the government that is designed to serve us.

A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The answer is basically GDP and military spending are the only things the USA is number 1 in. Even though having an absurdly high child mortality rate is cool because they don't know shtein yet, it's gross that we're so lacking in pretty much every thing else.

We could easily fund the underfunded departments and still allow our government to hand as much money as humanly possible to the private sector if we weren't so hell-bent on war.
