I've had parents call me at school and tell me that I'd better tell "the truth" about Lincoln.  And my little portion of Hell Florida isn't nearly as culturally southern as other states.

(Though, if you look at some of his actions, he did do a few things that could be considered questionable.  Either you look at them as the acts of a President trying to keep his country together, or as a President overreaching his Constitutional mandate.)

Professionally I reply that my view of teaching history is to treat our great figures as human - with faults and foibles - which makes their greatness to me all the more astounding.  Washington owned slaves and struggled with the practice in juxtaposition with his view of liberty, Jackson an explosive temper that led to a fatal duel with Charles Dickinson, but also was somehow an effective politician.  Lincoln had depressive episodes and dealt with civil war and personal tragedy while in the White House, yet managed to lead the nation during its greatest crisis.  I try not to make the common history teacher mistake of sanctifying these individuals, and I must teach the facts of history as facts.

Of course, what I really want to do to those South-Will-Rise-Againers is sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic.  Goes nice with my baritone, and the Civil War imagery is impossible to miss.
