You realize that you don't need auto insurance correct?  Do you pay a fee ($695) if you don't have auto insurance?  Go take the bus or subway.

that's because if you don't drive a car you wont get in an accident....what is the equivalent in human health to taking the bus or subway??

show me a way to 100% guarantee people wont get sick and all of a sudden your analogy isn't laughable and id agree that not everyone should have health insurance

its long been stated by the tea party and now much of the right that they don't want a federal government period.....the funny thing is that the states who receive the most federal aid are where all these anti govt cranial lumps live....I say let em all fend for themselves if thats what they want and see how long they last

I am showing you that your example of auto insurance doesn't work.

Taxpayer:  I don't have children so why do I have to pay property school taxes??

Me:  You don't have to pay school taxes.  Just sell your house.
Straw man argument.  Here is another.  I don't believe in war therefore my tax dollars shouldn't fund the Department of Defense.  BTW, no one has ever been kicked out of an ER because they don't have insurance.  We are discussing financing healthcare, not the delivery.

I will stay out of the liberal circle jerk thread.  No need for facts or reality to complicate things.

But, again, that's already how health care works in this country. The healthy peoples premiums are used to pay for the sick people. that's what happens when you run a for profit health care industry
Healthy people pay less for health insurance than unhealthy under individual policies.  You are correct that for group health policies, the healthy or young will pay higher actuarial rates to cover for the old and sick.

Even in the individual market, a young healthy person's premiums get used to pay for the care of the older sicker people who's care costs more than what they are paying for their policy. It has always been this way, because it's the only way to make a health care market like ours work (and be profitable for the people providing the insurance)

There has to be an individual mandate because that was the entire point of the bill...to either get everyone health insurance, or make those people that don't have it pay something into the system. that way, when they get hurt and can't pay the bill, the taxpayers aren't picking up 100% of the tab.

Of course, a public option would have been much better.
You do realize that this bill doesn't work without deep subsidies from the government to the poor to pay their bill?  Your concern for the taxpayer is noted however not substantiated with facts.

The subsidies are being funded mostly by taxes on businesses and very high wage earners. Not only does uninsured people goign to the ER and not being able to pay their bill end up being paid for by the tax payer, but they also run up the premium prices on insurance for everyone else.

I'd still prefer a public option. Do a system like Australia's. Or, as I read in an article a couple weeks ago, make it so basic health care services are covered by the public option (like going to your PCP), while everyone buys insurance for more serious medical problems.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

it actually works exceedingly well....i suspect you agree but cant say so because god forbid the aca would run on a similar premise and be successful....

Your example of auto insurance and health insurance are not the same.  The ACA is not the worst thing ever invented, in fact it could work if there were some adjustments made to it.

I've got a way out of this problem:  allow people to opt out of the requirement to have health insurance.

Here's how it would work.  There would be an Obamacare type system involving for profit companies, or a single payer system that offers health insurance, it doesn't matter which.  You either join it or you don't.  Limited, defined open enrollment periods to keep people from hopping on board just when they get sick, etc.  Now, you're free to opt out.  BUT....if you opt out, you will not receive ANY care you cannot afford.  If you have the coin, great, you get served.  If not...we aren't going to pay for your slacker ass and good luck with that bad ticker, exploding boil, or metastatizing cancer.  You wanted freedom and you got it.
