Speaking of the idea of political heroes -- the problem with the right today is they've moved from someone like George Will being a political hero to Sarah Palin/Joe the Plumber.  Culture wars and anti-intellectualism is worn with a badge of honor by so many in the GOP.

This country can't even have a legitimate debate about the tax system or national debt because the GOP is too busy trying to pass things like transvaginal ultrasounds and taking away women's rights to bring lawsuit for employment discrimination -- all in the name of getting back to the "good old days.".  There were no good old days unless you were a rich white male.  PASS on going back to anything resembling them.

That's why the "Right" contains so many constitutional zealots.  Things WERE THAT WAY.  White males ruled, they owned the colored folk, women weren't allowed to vote or own property... that's the living breathing definition of what it means to be CONSERVATIVE.

Its funny watching Hawk freak out about "the evidence" while ignoring the link posted talking with the girl trayvon was on the phone with when it happened. BTW when I was 16, if I was on the phone with my girl or any girl I tended to go outside and walkaround to get some privacy from the family. But trayvon should have walked straight home from the store. He's not aloud to be out, walking around, taking shelter from the rain for a few minutes, standing still for a few, etc. Nope, the only logical solution is he doubled back to beat up zimmerman unprovoked. I haven't much cared about the race angle of this story being circlejerked over here, namely whether Zimmerman himself is racist.  The actual facts of the case are more basic and easier to understand:  From the beginning of the incident with Martin, Zimmerman was in control.  He was in a car, armed, and calling the cops.  He endured literally no threat from the unarmed teenager until he disobeyed direct orders from the police to stand down, continued his pursuit of Martin, and got out of the car.  At that point, who knows what happened beyond there was a fight and Zimmerman blew a hole in Martin's heart.

Zimmerman killed an unarmed teenager whom he confronted against orders from the police.  It's that simple.  A decent prosecutor should be able to secure Manslaughter conviction.  A great one should get Murder 2.

Regarding race, the most troubling view of how little progress has been made in race relations in this country is not that Zimmerman was a scared racist who killed an innocent black kid.  The real problem is the institutional bigotry that allowed an entire police department to let the incident pass without serious investigation and detention of Zimmerman.   Munson was right as rain: had the shooter been black he would not have been released that night.  We all know that.  Well, most of us know that.  Those who don't, well I don't know what to say about them.  Nothing nice.

A 911 dispatcher isn't the police.  There is also no evidence that Zimmerman didnt turn around when instructed to do so.  In fact it sounds like he stopped hustling after the kid on the 911 tape when instructed to do so.   

Munson you sound like the special prosecutor.   You can't base affadavits on conjectures like his mom thinking its him screaming.

As for the conservative nonsense...  What's that quote.   To be eighteen and not be liberal means you don't have a heart.   To be forty and not be conservative means you lack a brain.

It's not ironic.  The labels shift overtime.  The racist klan members constitute the GOP today.  I've heard that argument frequently and it makes zero sense.   The deep south labeled themselves Dems and now they're Repubs.  What they believe is the same just the title isn't.  To be clear, you are in the party which they are in.  They aren't voting left. 

And I'm also fairly sure Churchill's quote was talking about economic policy.  True "conservatives" who legitimately favor limited government wouldn't recognize the modern GOP.

this is so true...the pubs have moved so far right since the neo con movement of the last decade....and not just socially tho thats the major part of it...but even fiscally....look at grover norquists pledge for example
