How Republicans pushed away smart people

Good read and certainly paints a pretty dim picture for the future of the right.

Survive?  Sure.  But you can bet it wouldn't be pretty.  I wonder if FOX offered him big $$ to be the uber-contrarian if he'd bite.  At least he could continue to donate to whomever he chooses.

it would be brilliant if FOX gave him his own show and let him do his thing on their network, what a coup that would be

six sentences of original prose bracketing three paragraphs of quotes.

this is what passes for a good read?

Generally, this guy is more right than wrong.  But I think he leaves out a fundamental difference between conservatives and liberals:  conservatives don't like to think of new things, try new things, change things, etc.  It goes against their most basic implulse to resist, to stand firm, to honor tradition, etc.  They don't want to open too many books for fear that what they read may inspire them to change their minds, might challenge something held true by them or their forbears, etc.

In short, the intellectual life will always liberalize those who live it.

The only opportunity that exists is for Republicans to move away from the social right.  Liberals leave a bit of an opening, because while they embrace education and science, both are trumped by idealism.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

The Daily Show tonight is farging amazing.

Anytime they take the time to point out Fox News hypocrisy and otherwise batshtein crazy things being said on taht network, it's classic.

I think the word you're looking for is Plutocracy.

Unless you believe that rich people are by definition the best people.

You could be right, I am admittedly not a semantic genius. But it seems that in reality I believe we live in a society where we have a ruling class that nears the nobility associated with a monarchy. I would appreciate it if you were to put the proper terminology to it. Look at the Bush family, or the Gore family....... I know I did a research paper on it a million years ago (a slight exaggeration) when I was in college and the parallels between our government and nobility through the ages is remarkable.

Clearly the rich do.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.
