Shouldn't this thread me on the no hippos board.  I come to the general board to read about zombie apocalpyses and what MDS had for dinner.

This thread is why we have a No Hippos board.  No Hippos isn't topic sensitive as you can talk about anything there that you can here....politics, movies, religion, tv, etc, etc.  Only difference is that there's no flamming behavior in the NH section.....which is why IGY doesn't post there.  He knows his limits.  And MDS doesn't post there because IGY doesn't post there.

So was IGY the one who told MDS he should enter a medium which is dying and going to be nonexistent in 10 years?

No, he came up with that one all on his own.  But let's not act like there isn't going to be a need for sports reporters (or reporters in general) in 10 years.  Should MDS gain enough skill in his craft, there's no reason why he still won't be able to land a job with ESPN or SportsLine or any other website that covers sports*.

Writing for a website is no different than writing for a newspaper.  If anything, I'd say it would be easier because you probably don't have as many restrictions in terms of article length.

* It ain't happening for MDS.  But I'm sure there's plenty of talented writers out there who are just breaking into the paper business who will find a home on an established website in the next decade.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

As much as I love sports, I would never ever want to write about it for a website. My life is doomed to teaching 25 10 year old kids who aren't mine about how George Washington couldn't tell a lie and how to do long division. Though a leftist political blog isn't out of the question.
