I've said more than once that we need term limits in congress. Then, I feel you wouldn't have what we have now, old crusty bastiches on both sides more worried about keeping their party in control of the senate than actually acting for the benefit of the people that elected them. You wouldn't have that 'click'. The good old boy network. And anyone who ran would know that they wouldn't be making a career out of it, therefore you would have candidates wanting to make their mark and have the wishes of the people and what to do to make things better for them no.1 on their agenda.

I don't really know about the draft one way or the other. When we last had a draft it didn't work so well. Kids who had no idea what to expect were drafted and 6 months later getting shot at and blown up in Vietnam. Through no doing of their own they were put overseas half a world away and seeing horrors that scarred them for life, if it didn't end it for them. Some people just aren't cut out for the military, and unless our actual borders are at risk and our homeland in danger of being invaded, I have to say no to the draft. I don't feel it right or a just cause to put people in a position were they are getting shot at and could die just so "the big wigs" up on the hill might think twice about sending our future off to war.

On the other hand, if you took the high school graduate and sent him off to boot camp under the foregone conclusion that he would have those jobs that Dio talked of, like driving trucks, cooking the chow, maintaining and building military structures here at home and abroad, while getting free schooling that would give them an upper hand when they get out, like college prep, I think a lot of youngsters would be much better off for it. But that would be the only way I'd agree to it. Also, those students who are exceptional, who graduate early, have those higher IQ's or are so smart that putting them in the military would be doing a disfavor to society in general because they have more to give then the military would allow would be exempt by whatever guidelines seen fit by people in the world of medicine or technology.

So you basically don't want a draft because you are young enough to have to serve.

Poor self-serving bastich.

no i dont want a draft because its unconstitutional. i didnt want one when i was 16, am 22 now or when ill be 50. if you want a draft, enlist. if you already are enlisted then thank you for your service. if you want a draft and arent enlisted and are too old to serve then farg you.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Article 1, Section 8 begs to differ.

it gives congress the power to create, arm and finance the military (militia in the constitution) but i don't remember anywhere that it gave congress the power to establish a draft and snatch all of the able bodied young men from their homes and send them off to war.

You graduated from college?

no.  he graduated from temple.

however, he's still correct in saying that a draft is unconstitutional.

Yeah, it doesn't specify how to "raise and support Armies," but the intent is pretty clear.

Diomedes

my copy of the constitution clearly says the government has the power to snatch all able bodied young men from their homes and send them off to war.  after they are compelled to marry each other, of course.  able bodied young women on the other hand are mentioned only as 'snatch,' nothing about war

well by all means let blindly follow at 230 year old document written by people who defined the term "human being" as a white man who owned land.

You argue against the draft on Constitutional grounds, and when you are proven wrong, you argue that the Constitution is meaningless. Failing that, you leave it up to your own speculation. Your apparent education was a waste of my tax dollars.
