The Eagles FO is flat out wrong on this one. But for the players to be getting all uppity is wrong too.

Like an uppity negro (or worse), right?

You used to hear "uppity" all the time during the pre-Civil Rights era - in reference to some black person who was somehow not docile, subordinate, or undignified enough for white people's taste.  That word is still used relatively often in reference to a black person (especially in comparison to how often it is used in reference to a white person) - as you so clearly demonstrated.  ::)

And yes, I know there are white players on the team - a few of them, anyway.  But what was the predominant image you had in your mind when your mind retrieved the word "uppity"?  A bunch of black guys, probably. That is the predominant image of the league, and the predominant image that people think of when they think of the players as a collective unit.

definitely...only black people can be "uppity".   i just looked up the definition and it said so right there.

Of course white people can be "uppity" - but the word has such a history in connection with black people who didn't/don't "stay in their place" that it has definite racial connotations.  It is similar to the dreaded n-word in that it is linked to an unfortunate period of brutal racial degradation, and it can definitely be taken as a racial insult.

And despite such atrocities as slavery, Manifest Destiny, colonialism, corporate sharks, and U.S. foreign policy...just compare the number of times that a black person has been referred to as "uppity" with the number of times that a white person has - and you'll come out with a figure something like 10,000,000 "uppity" black people for every 1 "uppity" white.

phreak meant no harm whatsoever but a better choice of words could have been used

especially in the way the rich white guys in the eagles front office treat their 'property'

their philosophy

young black players they try and get to sign on the cheap so they can be gettin over on them in a few years

old black players get kicked to the curb while the runyans and akers get deals well into their 30's

god forbid a young black guy want real money...if he does he gets blackballed and benched for no reason

not to mention their philosophy of getting mormons and so called good people before they get athletes...they dont want the loud 'uppity' black man on the team...they want the submissive house negro

Even if true, none of this blather justifies your insinuation that a poster is making racist comments, or is intimating as much.  Brother made a football comment, and you come in here like Jesse Jackson on PMS, making an ass of yourself.

Get the farg out.

Why it's Diomedes, the talking rat.  You are such a waste, even as a rodent.

Any time the word "uppity" is used in reference to a black person or black people, it justifies a closer look.  That's the way things have been set up over the centuries - than even to this day, I've seen the questionable, double-standardish use of the word "uppity".  It could be the Phreak is "the opposite of that kind of thinking" as Ice says - but it is not unjustified for a person who doesn't know Phreak from Dustin Diamond to come across this word and take offense.  I don't squat on this board so I don't really know many of the personalities all that well...except for those who have taken the time to distinguish themselves during the times I've been on here as demented jerk-offs, such as yourself.  :boo

You should be posting on the Rainbow Coalition site about this, not here.  Go find some offended types like yourself to commiserate with and leave us alone.

Also, you're a horrible racist.  Lynch yourself.

I'll go lynch myself when you find yourself a freakin' life.  So it looks like I'm on this earth for the long-haul.  :-o

What good would it do to commiserate on another board when the issue-in-question is right here.  If this were any other situation, I believe you would call that kind of behavior cowardly - like going running to mamma when the class bully calls you a name.  If you don't want to hear about it, just cover your little ears and scream, or go crawl back into your hole.

DONE.  Back to (occassionally) lurking!  You make this place intolerable.
