I joined my company softball team and the first 3 practices resulted in the following injuries:

Practice #1 - pulled hamstring
Practice #2 - strained oblique
Practice #3 - partially torn calf that took 4 weeks to heal

Sounds like you might want to do something less strenuous. But since we're talking about softball that might not be possible. Competitive sitting, perhaps?

WTF?  You can't be older than me.  Those are like three of the most miserable injuries you can get.  Dude, stretch, stretch and to top it off, stretch some more.

Anybody ever run/trained with cracked ribs? I have a 5k coming up and my ribs are fargedinhalf bruised or cracked or torn cartilage or something.  Just curious about whether running for some distance will make me want to kill myself.

You're ballsy as hell if you're going to do that with a rib injury. The bouncing and heavy breathing if you get winded will hurt like hell.

If you decide to do it get several of those wide ace bandages and wrap yourself tight like wearing a corset type deal to help keep your rib cage from moving around too much

I've had busted ribs and everything I did hurt. Sneezing was out of this world awful. The trainers had me on the bike and doing light strength stuff and I hated it

You could also see about taking a cortisone shot

rjs246

Yeah so far sneezing and wrestling with midgets have been the two things and really farg me up. Jogging isn't pleasant but hasn't been unbearable. Basically I've been laid up for five days and the inactivity is driving me farging nuts so I want to run but am nervous about the aftermath.

I broke my ribs and partially punctured a lung doing the bull in the ring drill at football practice when I was 14. Hurt like a motherfarger. I wouldn't attempt s 5k unless they were healed. All that bouncing can't be good for the healing process. With ribs there's nothing you can really do to heal them faster...not like you can throw a cast on them to hold them in place. It's more your pain tolerance.

PhillyPhreak54

It's hard to say if it'll worsen if it's broken - if it is non displaced fracture you should be ok and not have to worry about it moving around too much and puncturing a lung or something. The cartilage injuries can linger forever especially if you aggravate them.

But a good bruise can feel like a break and if it's bruised it's just about pain tolerance

Maybe try a couple laps around the block to gauge how you feel under exertion.

How did you do it?

Munson

Yeah I broke a rib when I was 13/14 on an onsides kick recovery....got smashed by one of the guys. At first I thought i just got the wind knocked out of me. Found out on the next play that gettign down into a 3 point stance was hard, and firing out and running was impossible. Couldn't imagine trying to run 5k with that.

I've done shtein to my rib cartridge too, that shtein hurts.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

PhillyPhreak54

Yeah I'm cringing thinking about it now. Mine were busted by a RB putting his facemask in my ribs and I wheezed like a 90yr old emphysema patient and the cartilage injury was from getting drilled by a 90mph fastball. Goddammn hillbilly pitcher.

Rjs another thing is if the course is flat and you don't have a herky jerky running motion you should be ok. Some people run with ease and little upper body motion and others have a ton of arm action which will obviously irritate the rib cage
