From Spads:

QuoteThe action has started: The Eagles have traded offensive lineman Hank Fraley to Cleveland for an undisclosed draft pick in 2008. It had long been a possibility and now it is reality.
What does it mean? It means that Fraley has a chance to start in Cleveland. That is a great thing for him. Fraley was clearly beaten out by Jamaal Jackson here, so now he has a chance to go get some playing time and prove he is worthy of a new, long-term deal.

For the Eagles, it means Nick Cole is the backup at center. The coaches love that kid, who earned some recognition on Friday night lining up in the backfield as a blocking back for Thomas Tapeh.

The Eagles don't have a lot of experience behind the starters up front, so that is something to think about. But they absolutely have raved about Cole for two months. He is 350 pounds and very powerful and explosive. He did a fine job on Friday running the show, which must have convinced the Eagles that Fraley was expendable.

Other trades, I suspect, are in the works. Stay tuned.

Dumb move.

Well, I'm not happy with that.  He was about the best depth you could hope for...inexpensive, experienced, great attitude, talented and hard working.  This must be part of a larger plan to acquire some RB or LB depth...

esp since we didnt get a back in return.

could have used the depth.

I dont think it's dumb. There's good parts and bad parts.

Good

  • Fraley wouldnt be here past this year anyways
  • Get a draft pick

Bad

  • Jackson injury prone, no proven backup
  • Nick Cole depended on as backup center?

Well, how does this change things?  Obviously, Cole now makes the squad.  But he's not a G/C, right?  So who sticks at G?  And which position loses a roster spot to account for the extra OL?
Anyone but Reid.

Suggs was released and Green was put on IR.

Who do you want Droughns? Harrison? No way.

This means that Nick Cole is the backup C. And if Jackson, a guy who gets injured at times, goes down they're farged.

Pray that Jamaal stays healthy.

I guess they are impressed with Cole.

I went a little cross eyed when I say that, too.  Who says humanity will even survive that long?

My guess is that Cleveland already gave up a few picks this offseason already for Tucker and a few other players, and didn't have the pick to give the Eagles until 2008.

Jackson

Those guys are locks. That leaves two more spots open, IMO.

Pat McCoy
Trey Darilek or rjs's buddy Scott Young takes the 9th spot, IMO.

Would prefer the depth of having Fraley over a draft pick, let's hope there is some larger plan in the works here.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Where's Cole on that list Freak?  They aren't going to go without a backup C.  That's what I was getting at.  I think now they need to keep 10 OL, so where do they go light?  RB?  LB?  CB?

Ha! I'm an idiot. I forgot to add Cole in there. :-[

So maybe Darilek or Young don't make it. Cole just takes Fraley's spot.

That's what I was thinking. There was no value in this move for the Eagles unless the pick will help accomplish another goal. The team was not going to cut him, so the "they wanted to get something for him before he was released" angle doesn't hold up.
