QuoteBroncos' Williams killed Monday morning
Associated Press

DENVER -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. Mountain Time from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

A female passenger also was shot, according to a source familiar with Williams.

Williams was 24.

QuoteDenver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said that a little after 2 a.m., the white Hummer limousine that Williams and two others were traveling in was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that came up along its side. All three people in the limousine were hit. They were taken to area hospitals, where Williams was pronounced dead. The other victims, a male and a female, were not identified. Why the hell was it a Drive By?  The guy got a limo unlike a bengals player.  Its just sad to read this

Very sad. Had himself a helluva game yesterday, too, if any of you watched.
Maybe the voices aren't real, but, they've got some pretty good ideas...

I heard about Williams on the radio this morning on my way to work.

That sucks because he was an up and coming CB.

Tragic.

Indeed he did. When I heard the news on the way home I was stunned. Crazy to think about he was playing ball yesterday and then is shot dead hours later. Sad.

Geowhizzer

Was he involved in something he shouldn't have been, or is this just one of those inexplicable random shootings?

Tragic for his family.  Sad loss of a young life.

Most drive-bys aren't random.

Horrible tragedy for the NFL. A bad way for the league to start off the new year.

The main story on denverbroncos.com is called "Sudden Death"... and it's about their game yesterday.  :paranoid

A Denver sports reporter is on Cold Pizza saying that there are unconfirmed reports that Javon Walker was in the limo too.

QuoteWILLIAMS DIED IN JAVON WALKER'S LAP

A league source tells us that the current talk in team circles is that Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams expired in the lap of receiver Javon Walker after being shot early Monday morning in a limousine.

Williams, we're told, expired instantly.  Also in the limousine were linebacker D.J. Williams and receiver Brandon Marshall.  Two others who were riding in the vehicle with the Broncos players were shot, but Walker, D.J. Williams, and Marshall were not injured.

Initially, it was feared that Walker also had been shot, but it was determined that the blood on his clothing was from Williams.  (We really couldn't think of a more delicate way to report that specific fact, and we continue to feel nauseous about the entire ordeal.  We've heard good things about Darrent Williams from members of the media, and our thoughts are with his family.)

We're told that local police have strong leads as to the suspects, and that arrests are expected to come sooner rather than later.  Apparently, the bullets were fired by a group of men with whom the Broncos players had squabbled at a New Year's Eve party hosted by one or more members of the Denver Nuggets.

Damn. I wonder how this will affect Walker.
