Picked up The Wire yesterday as the wife hadn't ordered it yet from amazon, like you said IGY 89bucks at BestBuy.  Also picked up Band of Brothers on BluRay for 37 bucks, regular dvd set was 35 and i'm planning on getting blue ray soon as prices have really dropped

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

how much of an improvement is bluray over hd compared to hd over standard tv

HD DVD and BluRay were basically in the same ballpark.  HD you get on your TV is typically 1080i at the best, all bluray is 1080p.  1080p is the best picture you can get on the cheap right now, and its the format for the time being.  http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11319406  walmart has one for 78 bucks right now, its no frills, and doesnt even have a front lcd screen, but it displays in 1080p and upscales old dvd's to HD

Not sure if i mentioned this earlier, but The Wire wont be available on BluRay/HD since they shot it on 35mm film and Simon likes the gritty look of the way it was shot.  Apparently some of the seasons were able to be upscaled, but Simon refused to.

I've been looking at these for some time now...  but I'm waiting for the Netflix/Flikr/Internet based models to come down to about $100 or less.

Anyone have the Netflix feature on a Bluray player?  I've heard there are no new DVD releases available, and most of the titles are several years old or older.  Feedback?
The drawback to marital longevity is your wife always knows when you're really interested in her and when you're just trying to bury it.

not sure about the dvd player based ones, but i have it on my 360 and its great.  You have roughly over 12k titles last time i looked, and some are in HD quality.  There's new stuff on there, lots of older stuff, but a pretty good mix of stuff.  I think you can browse on netflix.com to see what they have available for on demand.

Got The Wire dvd set at Best Buy today.  Last copy they had in the store.  I've never seen any of it but I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah I can't wait.  Virtually everything HBO puts out that I've seen is quality, from Oz to Band of Brothers to the Sopranos and this is supposed to be at least as good if not better than them all.

I'm fairly confident no show can supplant Lost for me (I'm aware it's polarizing but it's by far my favorite show on TV) but this is the one show I've been looking forward to seeing for about 2 years.

Isn't that what you're supposed to do anytime you turn on the television?

I'll say to you what igy said to me when I first started watching; I'd give anything to be in your situation...to sit down and watch it fresh.
