The tapes. Man...I used to have some dope mixed tapes I would dub off multiple cassette tapes (thank you Columbia House). I was a stereo D.J.

I forgot what a key element of that age that was...dubbing shtein off the radio.

We had Flava Fridays and The Wake Up Show. I could sit in a chair, close my eyes...and just lose myself into the music.

I used to get most of my stuff off of Power 99's top 9 at 9.  It's catchy because they use so many 9's.  I taped a lot of their Fri and Sat night mixes too.  And when I was a teenager I started taping the quiet storm to play when I was with my g/f's. 

NAS had me cracking up when he was talking about taping stuff off the radio too......how you'd be going up and down the dial looking for a song and then when you found one you liked, you just missed the intro but you'd tape it anyway.  That shtein used to make me mad as hell.  That and how the dj would always talk over the beginning and the end of a jam and I'd get that shtein on my tape.  But then they'd play some crap song from start to finish without saying a single word.

i used to make quiet storm mixes for chicks when i was in grade school too. i called in and dedicated a song to this girl once, and when he asked me my name i got nervous and tried to say roger, but it came out roggie. tony brown laughed at me on air.  and the song was keith sweat of course.
