And I saw this today and while you might have all seen it before, I laughed:

I was hammered Sunday on the beach, and a shark washed up, must have been chasing a fish and got too close to shore.  I wrassled it, and took a few pictures.  When i threw it back into the ocean, it did the whole Shark Week thing when it swam up a wave, and jumped 2 feet into the air, it was awesome

How big was it?
about 2.5 feet.  I've caught a ton of them but one washing up is rare.  Also saw a dead sea turtle on the beach, really dont see them often.  I blame BP.  The bay is really healthy where our beachouse is at, i caught 16 crabs off the dock in a 1.5 day soak.  Water is amazingly clear, and yesterday we saw something we've never seen before.  There were no less than 40 horseshoe crabs mating on the boat ramp on our property.  It was crazy, they kept showing up, giant Horseshoe crab orgy, like 4 of them trying to farg one large female.  I think its a good sign that the water is in great condition.

Buddy of mine who frequents the bays said crab counts up 30-40% from last year so thats def a good sign

It is not however a sign that all is well,  or that we can return to previous harvest targets.  The Bay needs a good long break, and we fail to back off at our own peril.  We need the Bay.

i definitely agree Dio.  But the fact that something has worked is finally a good sign.  We're not in the Chesapeake Bay, but a side bay that is fed by both the Indian River inlet, and the Ocean City inlet.  They dredged between the bay we're on and the Indian River inlet, i really think thats helped get more water between the two.

It's a good sign in a year in which over a million gallons of oil will be spewed into a major gulf in which we harvest seafood. i can't imagine anything being safe to eat for a number of years to come outta that place.

I'm worried that, given the contamination in the gulf, demand and prices will be so high for our crabs and oysters that what little gains we've seen of late will be wiped out by either lax regulations "for these tough times," or by illegal harvesting.

The crabs and especially the oysters of the chesepeake need to be left alone for a while.    Humans need to stop killing all of the things they need to survive.

Doomed.
