Georgia congressman opposes pro-Gators resolution
By Mark Schlabach

Congressman Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) rarely goes against GOP opinion in key votes on Capitol Hill. But on Tuesday, the eight-term Congressman really found himself in the minority.

Kingston, who has represented District 1 in southeast Georgia since 1993, was the only member of Congress to oppose House Resolution 39, which commended "the University of Florida Gators for their victory in the 2006 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and for winning the national college football championship."

His reason? Kingston grew up in Athens, Ga., home of the University of Georgia, his alma mater and one of the Gators' fiercest rivals. Kingston still lives in Savannah, Ga., and flies to Washington weekly.

"Any time you can see Ohio State lose, it's a good day," said Kingston, who also attended Michigan State for two years. "However, there's just so far you can go. The Bulldog tendency in me hit and I had to vote no in a good, friendly rivalry."

The House bill passed by a vote of 414-1. Eight other congressmen from Georgia voted yes to the proposal, two voted present and two others didn't vote at all. The bill was sponsored by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and 19 other representatives from Florida.

The Gators defeated unbeaten and then-No. 1 Ohio State 41-14 in the BCS title game Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz., to win the school's second national championship in football. The Gators also won a national championship in men's basketball last season, becoming the first Division I-A school to hold both titles concurrently.

"I supported Florida in the game and wanted them to win and win big," Kingston told ESPN.com Thursday. "I'm obviously going to be partial to the SEC."

Such bills typically pass unanimously in Congress. For example, House Resolution 43, a bill that commended "the Boise State University Broncos football team for winning the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and completing an undefeated season," passed by a vote of 415-0 on Tuesday.

Here's how farged up real estate is at the moment.

There's a condo unit that just went to contract.  It was listed for sale in September for $789,000, dropped in price in November to $649,900 before finally crashing and burning at a sale price of $525,000.

That's shiver-inducing, folks.  At least for those of us in the real estate biz.

They also passed an increase to min. wage, a bill to halve college loan interest rates, and some other stuff.

This bit about the Gators doesn't exactly occupy their time.  It's the kind of thing that happens routinely, regardless who controls Congress.  The only interesting thing is that a fleshpopweed from GA can't be a good enough sport to congratulate the Nation's winning team.

Dear Spam Recipient,

The new Congress is back in session - and new legislation before it will affect your freedom of speech!

Senate Bill 1 and House Resolution 4682 would force churches, pastors, and Christian organizations (among others) using TV, radio, or the Internet to mobilize citizens around an issue to register with the federal government - just like churches in China and the former Soviet dictatorship of Belarus!

What happens, under such a law, if pastors speak out and work against partial-birth abortion?  Same-sex marriage?  What happens if churches speak out in support of conservative judicial nominees, or military chaplains' right to pray?

Under such a law, they are classified as "lobbyists" - in essence, our free speech is forbidden.

I have just added my name to the ACLJ's online PETITION OF PROTEST, and I encourage you to do the same.  The email below from the ACLJ has more information....

--------------------

This is urgent.  Your freedom of speech has literally never been so threatened as it is today.

Senate Bill 1 and House Resolution 4682 are clearly the work of politicians who want to control, limit, and silence Christians and conservative groups.

By classifying and regulating any Christian organization or church, which you may be a part of, as a "lobbyist" ...

... this legislation will forcibly restrict your right to free speech - which is absolutely unconstitutional.

I urge you to join our nationwide campaign by reading and signing our online PETITION OF PROTEST today and make your voice heard in this critical matter!
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leading the charge of Congress on this legislation, and it is moving fast.

We've got to fight back, and QUICKLY.  Here's what I am doing:

    * I am launching our nationwide campaign via email, radio, television, and the Internet, urging the House and Senate to reject this legislation.
    * I have also assembled a legal and legislative team to focus on this dangerous legislation; we have already produced a legal analysis (posted on our website) that details the dangers of the bill.

I am personally leading three senior attorneys and our entire Government Affairs team - working with Congress around the clock.

We've distributed significant legal memorandums throughout Congress, and we are preparing a complaint to file in federal court if necessary.

By supporting our nationwide PETITION OF PROTEST campaign with your online signature today, you are saying NO to those who would think nothing of taking away our right to speak freely.

No one has the right to regulate and restrict your free speech ... your pastor's free speech ... your church's free speech - nor to stop anyone from speaking out on the issues.

This is exactly the opposite of what the Founding Fathers intended when they included in the Constitution the right "to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Make no mistake - this may be the greatest threat to freedom of speech that Congress has ever considered ... one of the most significant violations of the free exercise of religion and the freedom of political speech in our nation's history.

It will effectively silence conservative Christians and eliminate political discourse on the most crucial issues of the day.

Act today!  Add your name to our online PETITION OF PROTEST, then use our website's forward-to-friend tool to encourage your friends to join our nationwide campaign as well.

Only you can preserve your freedom.  Thank you for supporting the ACLJ.

It's easy to believe this is a good idea, but the oil companies have no reason not to just turn around and give it to the consumer up the ass in order to maintain their profits.

I don't care if it's Republicans or Democrats - legislators on Capitol Hill presuming to pass "Ethics" bills is funny.

so lets let them get away with tax murder and STILL give it up the ass to the consumer....like they have for the last two years???

The bottom line is that it will just end up being another tax we pay.  Unless they actually work toward meaningful regulations before passing tax bills, pretty much all tax increases get passed right now to us.

But yeah, it's totally awesome to raise their taxes.  That'll show 'em.  Thank God we have a Democratic congress so that they can really get the important stuff done.

Diomedes

Oh stop it.  Congress did nothing but cater to Bush for six years, blocking any proposal from the other side.  People like you cry about middle ground and how important it is, until the other side actually gets some leverage, at which point it's all a corrupt thing anyway and they couldn't possibly improve upon the system engendered by the ruling party.

theres a reason the bush admin has fought this tooth and nail
and theres a reason the oil companies are up in arms about it

and i can guarantee you the reason is not because they care about the american consumer

big business in general has a ridiculous amount of tax breaks as it is and big oil has tons more that other big business dont even have...all thanks to the oil men in the white house....its time for that to end

Gas prices went down about ten cents since yesterday.  I was driving past an intersection where two gas stations are located and noticed prices went from $2.33 yesterday to $2.23 today.
