Blank DVD's hold 4.7 GB's, Typical DVD's with movies have around 7 Gigs, you can removed most stuff off there and be left with around 4-5 gb's and can compress it a little bit and get the entire movie with very little loss of picture. 

So other than being completely off on how much space a blank dvd has, I was pretty much on point with everything else.

Here's another question now.....

With that program you mentioned earlier, can you use that to edit video clips and stuff?  More specifically, I've got a bunch of video clips of my kids that I took at X-mas using my digital camera.  So I've got about 15 or so clips of them opening presents, playing guitar hero, blah blah blah. 

Would that program allow me to basically merge them into one continuous video or is it a completely different program for that type of stuff?

as long as you keep the ganortin screw in place while ripping the CD, everything should come out fine.

i think you can sarge, if not, there is a ton of other programs available to do those.  Ive never tried it with the software i have, but i dont even think you would need to compress it as long as its not 4 hours worth

It depends on what you're using, and how you're going about it. Like Biscuit implied, you can compress the video to the point that it's really ugly. On the other hand, I've seen some pretty good copies. In one case, the copy was stripped of all the menus and bonus material, and copying just the movie was capable at original quality. I saw the copy on my 50" plasma, and it looked perfectly acceptable.

Any special software you'd recommend for burning a dvd?  If I were to try it today, I'd just be using windows media player.  Will that work just fine or should I look at picking something up? 

I just got a copy of Roxio Toast, and I'm still learning how to use it. Adam was using something else (some kind of demo ware to rip files...but I forget what it was.
