I read that earlier and was shocked at the amount of times his issues were swept under the rug.

Texas Monthly is running a long read series on murder and corruption in Waco...part one is out now and it is fantastic.

Third part is out.

FYI the dude who was arrested as the main suspect was executed. I never knew of this case because of how long ago it happened and the guy was executed before I started working there.

Here's his final statement...

coupled with the article? This is why my pro-death penalty stance has waned over the years. Way too many proven mistakes have been made with cases and until they get more stringent on the checks and balances of executing someone they need to halt the visits to the chamber.

From the gross negligence of court appointed (and paid) counsels, to the state reps and judges overlooking these miscarriages and rubber stamping the executions to the many other issues that can be found...there are too many checks in the wrong column here. It has to be fixed.

I will never forget the time I worked there especially when I did the escorts from our unit over to The Walls where the executions were held. The death chamber made the hairs on my neck stand up and gave me goosebumps and it still creeps me out to this day. Thinking about the guys who wake up that morning knowing its the last time they would ever wake up?

Having to remove them from the final visitation with their families? Gut wrenching.

The Death House is like a mini-prison. It had three cells and is approximately a 10ft walk from their cell to the chamber. Some guys go willingly, other guys do not and have to be forcibly removed and carried.

My first transport was for a guy who shot a police officer and he was calm as can be. Being a new guy I had to ride in the back of the van with him and he was talking with the the entire way. He asked me to move aside a bit because he'd not ridden in a car in so long he was afraid he may get motion sickness. He told me that he was ready to go because he'd been locked up for so long and he didn't want to live the rest of his life like that.

Now there are some really awful people there who are guilty as can be and deserve the punishment. But with the amount of questions arising they have to fix the system. Because once it is acknowledged and proven 100% they have executed a truly innocent person all hell will break loose, and rightfully so.

My line on the death penalty has been the same for years. I'm all for it, in theory. In practice it's been proven over and over again to be a misused tool that has killed the wrong people and disproportionately punishes minorities and the poor.

The argument that governments should not be in the business of murdering their own citizens is compelling on the surface, but farg that, there are some evil motherfargers out there doing some evil shtein that need to be deaded. Unfortunately, until we can accurately sort out who they are, the death penalty is just another mechanism for those with comfort and influence to wield against those without.

Death penalty does more bad than good. It just doesn't act as enough of a deterrent. Evil motherfargers will do what evil motherfargers will always do regardless of the penalties.

The death penalty is the last segment in a process that has been often found to be unfair and continues to be bias against minorities. The fact that politics is more important than justice, more innocent people will continue to find themselves in jail or executed.

Death penalty is no good in my book. Not until they fix the process which they never will.

The only thing I can add is if they change the method of execution and just make it so dramatic, and inhumane, that people have no choice but to think twice (being set on fire, being raped to death by HIV infected hooligans, genital mutilation) things that make you go hmmm.

Yeah, I'm okay with the idea in concept...but the implementation sucks and can't be trusted. And on top of that, they've figured out how to drag it out and make it ridiculously expensive.
