DH, thats no joke.  Get checked out.  I'm not in the great shape, but my bp is a steady 125/80

I have no clue what my blood pressure is and I'm pissed off all the time lately.

Tomahawk

I wouldn't worry about it, DH. I'm sure it's faulty testing equipment.

DH

Ha, I havent had a cigarette since last January. I drink a cup of coffee a day, and thats it on the caffeine - no soda, energy drinks, etc. I think I eat OK, work out, have the normal amount of stress, so this is concerning just because its a surprise. I called my doc earlier - he's calling me back by end of the day...hopefully between now and then, I dont turn into Reggie Lewis.

phattymatty

hmm, maybe pick up smoking again, then you can blame it on that.

MDS

maybe you need to go to a camp where you can concentrate better, get a real clear grasp on things

but i dont think they exist
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

SunMo

hmmm, i wonder what could have given high blood pressure?  maybe...

Maybe if Trent Green wouldn't have had such a weak ACL, Kurt Warner would have never played for the Rams, thus the Eagles would have won the NFC Championship in 01'. farging Trent Green and his weak ass knee.

nahhhhh
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

DH, 170/118 could be dangerously high. 150/105 is high but isn't dangerously so unless over a long period of time. What you won't find searching the internet is that a number of things can effect BP several points either way such lying vs sitting, first thing in the morning vs through out the day and that it can stay elevated 10 or 20 points even 2-3 hours after heavy exercise such as working out.

So the best thing is to see your doc but also if it comes back high again get a home BP cuff. You can get a digital one that works well for fairly cheap, probably under $25 - get one that tracks the results and keeps a log. I think Kinetik is a good brand. Taking a few readings through the day is easy and is the best way to see if it is just a spike from something you might not think of such as MSG (sodium) in food or an over the counter cold or allergy pill or a chronic condition that needs attention (though 170/120 is pretty high in any case but it is still possible it is from a transient cause and it sounds like you didn't have it 3 months ago with your last blood donation). Another thing about a home BP cuff is that if things stay fairly normal you know it and it gives you some peace of mind rather than worrying until your next appointment. Also, what Tomahawk said is true, those public machines you see in the drug stores and supermarkets are often inaccurate, sometimes by a lot.

I say you stop worrying about it.

Cavemen didn't need doctors or blood pressure cuffs. Just meat and fire and a good old fashioned beating-stick.

Cavemen also lived to 30. But as you point out, the lifestyle tradeoff may be worth it.

My blood pressure has never once been in the "normal" range; it's always low, though never "dangerously" low.  I credit natural strength from genetics.  Some of us are just born strong, like me.

I think we can all agree that after 30 life is pretty much not worth living anyway.

When I awake in the morning my blood pressure is usually around 100/60, but sometimes it is more like 185/130. It depends on where I fasten the inflatable cuff. Medically this phenomenon is known as the peter principle.

until you hit 80 and you get to crap wherever and whenever you want, and can probably get away with flinging it, too

I still don't know what my blood pressure is. If DH dies, I'll consider consulting WebMD or Eagaholic, he apparently watches a lot of t.v.
