Falcons re-sign Finneran

QuoteFalcons re-sign WR Finneran

With veteran free agent Brian Finneran close to signing with the Philadelphia Eagles over the weekend, the Falcons were able to do what the wide receiver has done for them time and time again — do what was needed to make the catch.

The team announced that it re-signed Michael Vick's favorite wide receiver Monday. Finneran signed a four-year contract.

The retention of Finneran, who has been with the Falcons since 2000 and led Atlanta's wide receivers with 50 catches for 611 yards and two touchdowns last season, was considered a priority. Though Finneran is the No. 3 wide receiver behind Michael Jenkins and Roddy White, he has an established trust with Vick — especially in third-down situations.

Of Finneran's catches, 62 percent went for first downs or scores last season. Since 2001, 68 percent of his receptions have been for first downs or touchdowns.

The Falcons also re-signed backup defensive back Omare Lowe, a restricted free agent, to a two-year contract, according to his agent, Ken Zuckerman. Lowe was one of Atlanta's top special teams players and gained enough trust over the season to start in place of injured cornerback DeAngelo Hall in the season-finale against Carolina.

While signing Finneran might not create the stir of some of the other free-agent moves taking place around the league, the team's coaching and management staff felt securing Finneran was crucial in keeping the brunt of the Falcons' receiving nucleus — tight end Alge Crumpler is the team's leading ball catcher — intact.

Finneran became a free agent when his participation in 45 percent of the Falcons' offensive plays triggered a clause in his contract that allowed him to test the open market. Finneran started seven of the 16 games in which he played and also served as one of several punt returns after regular Allen Rossum suffered hamstring and knee injuries.

The Eagles, where Finneran first made an NFL roster after going undrafted out of Villanova, made a serious push for Finneran, but the Falcons' offer and his familiarity with the Falcons' system sealed his return.

HahahahahahahaHAHAHA

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Wait, so is Finneran being signed by the Eagles tomorrow?
