Yeah, we get our high speed internet through the phone company, not cable.  So that doesn't figure in.  Plus, cable doesn't offer NFLN, SciFi, Comedy, Disney, Cartoon, and several other channels that get a lot of play in my house.  fargers.

Noggin.  :boom

NFLN is the only one you listed that I don't get.

BTW, I just called to inquire about my local channels in HD, and got a "sometime in 2007" response.

EDIT:  A nice little bonus was that they just added Universal HD to our lineup.  It's already one of our favorite networks.

Of course, The Grumpy Song does make me laugh.

arent their stations tho that will televise certain shows in hdtv...like tnt might show their nba games in hdtv but not their saturday night movie

for whatever reason, everything TNT shows is in HD, but yeah, there will be stuff on ESPN, and the networks that isn't HD, you can still watch that channel, but the picture doesn't fill the whole screen because it's not in HD format...

FF... you have comcast down there?

i don't get HDNet, HDNet Movies, or Universal HD

TNT HD is actually very solid.  It broadcasts pretty much everything in some form of HD.

The major network HD channels will broadcast everything, just not everything in HD.  Stations like FOX HD and ESPN HD will but bars on the sides of the screen when a program is not in HD, but ABC, NBC, and CBS usually just leave the black bars on the sides.

Discovery, HBO, Showtime, INHD 1/2, HDNet /movies, and Universal HD are all full-time HD.  In fact, Discovery HD puts out one of the best possible HD signals.  I've watched programs on there that would be relatively uninteresting in standard def but were "off da hook" (so to speak) in HD... like Sunrise Earth.

Time Warner.

yeah, i've watched shows that i would not otherwise watch on Discovery HD just because the picture is so sweet

Your new TV is at a 16:9 widescreen ratio, which is the same as HD broadcasts.

Regular TV is 4:3, so you have the option of watching with bars on the sides or using settings on your TV or cable box to zoom and/or stretch the picture so that it fills up your screen.

The good news is that watching with bars on the sides does not harm an LCD projection TV long-term.  With a CRT TV or a plasma TV, doing so regularly would cause burn-in problems.

Just relax... 16:9 is the future of TV.  4:3 is the past.

Precisely. That being said, with DirecTV I get twice as many channels for half the price of cable.

"Twice" as many channels for "half" the price? You must have had really crappy cable service.

FYI, you just agreed with a guy that has Dhani Jones is his avatar and hbionic & Sarge in his sig pic.

I'll concede the Dhani pick as lame, but I have avatars and sigs off so I don't see em. The KC Tailgate pick stays though...

I just found out definitively that local channels in HD will be available in my area by the end of May 2006.

I will probably make the switch after that.
