Three-time Pro Bowler LaVar Arrington of the Washington taterskins has reached an agreement with the team, with the assistance of his agents Carl and Kevin Poston, to become a free agent and provide the taterskins with much-needed salary cap relief.
Head coach Joe Gibbs is scheduled to address Arrington's release at 12 noon ET on Monday.

For Arrington, the release ends a six-year run in Washington. He was drafted by the taterskins with the second overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

LaVar Arrington
Arrington became one of the NFL's top linebackers one year later, recording 100-plus tackles from 2001-03 and earning Pro Bowl trips each of those years. In 2004, he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him most of the season.

Last season, Arrington gradually returned from the injury and earned back his starting assignment in Week 9. He started six of the last eight games, plus both playoff games, and finished with 53 tackles (45 solo).

For his career, Arrington has logged 467 tackles (335 solo), 22.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and three interceptions.

His signature play as a taterskin may be the game-changing interception he recorded against Carolina on Oct. 21, 2001, when he raced 67 yards for a touchdown. The play helped turn around the taterskins season that year and elevated Arrington's status as an elite player.

Arrington's departure also creates an opening for a starting job at the weak-side linebacker spot. Warrick Holdman, who started seven games at weak-side linebacker last season, is also an unrestricted free agent. Another option, Chris Clemons, is a restricted free agent.

The taterskins have several linebackers who could move into the role, including second-year player Robert McCune. Washington drafted McCune in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

BSB,  Any word on the adjusted cap hit? I guess he has to clear waivers first.

Doubt he has to clear waivers since he is a vested veteran

You're right. He bought his freedom instead.

And I wouldn't mind if he hopped his ass in an Eastern Motors ride and drove his ass right on up 95. :)

I was a big fan of Lavar when he was at PSU, but after he became a Skin he went into my shteinhouse. Always thought the same thing about him in College as the Pro's, that he's undiscliplined and free lances too much.

i was going to visit penn state next month and i was going to wear all my lavar stuff.  Doesn't look like that is happening now.

I will post up any more information that pops up but it doesn't seem like much will come out unless its in a newspaper.  So washington times and wash post.  tommorrow there is a press conference and i am sure a lot will be answered.  the only place where the number 4 million was used was from mort so i don't know if that is completely true.

people are saying 4 million(i think it will be 3.2 due to his base salary being and release fee being a difference of .8 )+6.5 in roster bonuses=10.5(or i think 9.7) million for the skins.  i really don't think we get back the roster bonus though so only 3.2- 4 million??

Despite Arrington's freakish athletic ability and the huge spark he provided last year when he was put into the defensive lineup, I'm sure the taterskins will either have a rookie or cheap depth guy plugged in by Gregg Williams and turned into a superstar... or another talented veteran, or maybe Arrington himself, will come to the Skins for minimum salary just to have the honor of playing for Joe Gibbs.

Or not.

QuoteSo LA is gone. Maybe there is some truth to that little Ray Lewis rumor that was floating around?

QuoteI think we are going to be in the market for either Julian Peterson, Will Witherspoon, or Akin Ayodele...
:-D

phattymatty

yeah this definitely was not a cap related move, they're going after one of the big name free agents.

SunMo

what does it say about your organization if one of your players would rather pay you 4+ million dollars just so he can be off the team?
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

rjs246

It says that your organization should euthanize itself.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Let them eat bootstraps.

ice grillin you

the arrington move is definitely part cap related but it has more to do with gibbs and snyder hating his guts...i wouldnt be surprised to see the taterskins make a big move to replace him anyway but if there is a new deal they definitely will be active players in free agency
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

im the board pharmacist....always one step above yous

Rome

I want the Eagles to sign Arrington for no other reason than to see G_F's head explode.
