WYSP no longer a rock station?

If industry scuttlebutt is correct, the days of WYSP-FM (94.1) as a rock station are numbered. Infinity Broadcasting has registered "freefm.com" Web domains for a bunch of stations, some that won't be carrying Howard Stern after late December. Last week, Infinity bought 941freefm.com - likely for WYSP. "Free FM" is a handle for "hot talk" - irreverent hosts and shows aimed at young audiences. WYSP actually did a variation of hot talk several years ago when it had Stern, Opie & Anthony, and Don & Mike on the air. Hot talk presumably would not affect WYSP's status as the Eagles station. Infinity won't talk about its plans.

Meanwhile, Arbitron's summer radio ratings are out, and the big winner was WMMR-FM (93.3). Fueled by its hiring of Preston & Steve, 'MMR tripled its ratings among listeners ages 18 to 34 from summer '04. WMMR also was the most popular station among 18-to-34s in the prime hours of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., zipping merrily past WYSP and WUSL-FM (98.9). (A chart of summer radio rankings covering all listeners, ages 12 and over, is on E11.)

why do people listen to Preston and Steve, they are god awful
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

Preston and Steve's voices make me cringe. They are HORRIBLE and so many people love them. I was thrilled when they were off the air and then heard they were coming back and it made me puke.

YSP is the only radio station I even listen to (when I actually turn on the radio). :boom

Man, I couldn't agree more.  XM is the best.  It has everything you could want.  Rock, jazz, old school hip hop, news, comedy, baseball, college football... it really does kick ass.

Best $12.95 I spend every month.

:yay

I prefer Ron & Fez.

Ron & Fez used to have another partner in the show, Ron Diaz.  It was actually called the Ron & Ron show until the guy quit to attend to his terminal wife.

They were just about to break nationally when the poor guy found out his wife had AIDS.

The show broke up and then Ron & Fez hooked up.  Their show started at a tiny-ass station here in Daytona & then they split when they got a bigger gig in Washington.

I was flipping through XM a while back and heard Fez's voice & knew immediately who it was.  His voice is definitely distinctive (nttawwt).

O & A are fricken awesome too.  I love listening to them, especially if I'm in a pissed off mood.  They make me laugh almost immediately no matter what they're talking about.  Plus, they don't have to worry about the jerkoffs from the FCC busting their chops about their language now, so they can pretty much let 'er rip.

yeah, O&A are just totally foul and repulsive, especially now that Norton is full-time.  O&A were actually good friends with Ron and Fez in New York and they got them the job on XM.

makes you wonder if 950AM will make a big push to broadcast eagles games.

I was never a huge fan of "shock jocks" yacking too much and being general adolescent on the air. A long time ago, I used to enjoy John DeBella when he was on MMR...but that was pretty much the limit. I'd rather listen to music.

Gosh, FM radio used to be soooo good back in the day. WMMR was practically underground material, WYSP transmitted in quad (and used great spacy noise behind the DJ's talking), and even WIOQ (does that even exist any more?) was good.

My favorite radio station is kexp out of Seattle.  www.kexp.org

I listen all day at work, often all evening at home, too.  I constanstly hear music I don't know.  Which is saying something.
