QuoteClarke: No interest in Luongo

PHILADELPHIA - If the Flyers are shopping for a goaltender - and the hot rumor is they're interested in Florida's Roberto Luongo - it's news to general manager Bob Clarke.

Clarke acknowledged Tuesday night that several clubs have called, one offering a goaltender in trade, especially after the news got out that Robert Esche would be out at least another week with an abdominal muscle injury.

But Clarke said Florida is not one of the teams with which he's had conversations.

"I haven't spoken with [Florida GM] Mike Keenan in some time,'' Clarke said before the Flyers-Flames game.

"We like our goaltending. We're not interested at all [in Luongo]. When Esche got hurt, we had other teams call us, not Florida, but we have no interest.''

Buffalo has three NHL-caliber goalies (although Ryan Miller is currently injured), but the Sabres were not one of the teams to approach the Flyers.

"One inquired to see if we wanted to acquire one of theirs,'' Clarke said. "But we didn't. We're fine with what we have. You lose a goalie for a couple weeks, we have someone else to play, that's not a problem.''

Besides, Luongo makes $3.2 million per year, and the Flyers are only about a million under the $39 million salary cap, so a substantial player would have to go to the Panthers to balance the deal.

Florida undoubtedly would want a young star such as Jeff Carter or Mike Richards, and those two players are totally untouchable.

"We have [Antero] Niittymaki,'' Clarke said. "It's time for him to play. He's a good young goalie.''

not that Clarke has never lied before, but just wanted to throw that out there.
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

:-D I figured that, since Clarke is actively denying interest, that Luongo will be in Orange and Black by the weekend.

Just got back from the game, I was sort of hoping to see OT and a shootout  ;D but I can't complain with the outcome.  :yay (Radivojevic scored the game winner with :53 seconds left). Forsberg is in a league of his own.

That 2nd period was amazing. All of those SH situations and Esche was money.

Also SanFilippo of the Delco times was on with Big Daddy last night and he said that he thinks Primeau could be out until after the Olympic break.
