Rookie defensive tackle Keith Vickerson sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee late in the first quarter Thursday.

Vickerson tried to stay optimistic about the first knee injury of his career, although he smiled when asked if he heard his knee ''pop'' on the hit.

''I've got faith,'' Vickerson said. ``I'm not thinking it's anything right now. Hopefully, the MRI can come out negative.''

As Atlanta quarterback Matt Schaub scrambled out of bounds to the left, Vickerson remained on the field back to the right.

Replays seemed to show he might have been the victim of a chop block. Atlanta's offensive line is coached by Alex Gibbs, whose Denver lines were infamous for legal cut blocks and the occasional illegal chop block.

''Part of the game,'' Vickerson said.

I give the dude credit for not bitching about it but at the same time, you can't discount the fact that whenever chop blocks are being mentioned, Alex Gibbs isn't too far away from the action.
