Agreed on how exhausting it is to try to communicate. You will learn quick though bc you're immersed in the culture now. The biggest problem I have is I try to speak in the same sentence structure as English and it always doesn't work like that.

Haha awesome....perfect front biz for her. "Bienvenidos, Matteo! Su leccion de espanol es de veinte  dolares. Y para un veinte dolares mas yo va a chupar le fuera"

Did I say that right?

close enough. thats where i am. like i know all the words and shtein but don't have the conjugation right. so to them i'm like "me want this" or " what that thing?"

they get it but i don't like to feel stupid.

Are there ads for condoms on every bus stop and street signage?

My first morning there I went and ordered breakfast in Spanish and felt like I was king of the world. Then I tried to take a taxi by myself and holy shtein...not ready!

pretty much. i was going to walk the two miles back from the stadium tonight but all the locals i was with told me not to because i would get robbed by machete. so i got a cab (it only cost 60 cents so no biggie) but by the time we got to  my crib he had picked up 5 people. there was a pregnant mom with a child on my lap when he dropped me off.

Nice! You have to take a Padilla Flotilla sign and wear a Phils cap.

Have you had a lot of people size you up to try to mess with you?

not really, they're all actually pretty nice. sure yeah once or twice a day some drunk dick tries to act tough but i'm the only red bearded icehole in this city of 110.000 people according to locals so i'm laying low until my spanish gets better.

i don't take more than like 30 bucks with me after dark, whichj is still more than most people here, and so far i'm keeping it cool. granted, it's been one week.

phattymatty

also 30 bucks is enough for 25 beers and 2 cab rides, with 3 bucks to spare. just to put shtein into perspective.

PhillyPhreak54

Which city are you in?

First couple days I went about the city I had like $200 on me thinking it was like the states. My girl tried to tell me but I couldn't fathom shtein being that cheap. But you're right...$30 is more than enough for a good meal and a shtein ton of beers.

I got pick pocketed by a taxi driver once. Sat in the front seat and his door was farged up so I couldn't open it. While I was farging around with it he got me bc I wasn't paying attention. I realized it about two hours later. I looked for that icehole for a week. He took me for $500 bc I was switching hotels and hadn't put that into my inner pocket. But in the end I looked at it like it was about three months salary for him so I hoped he used it to help his kids.

Only one dude tried to square me up but other than that no other problems.

I'd love to do what you're doing. Being in an environment like that is cool. Learning new cultures and experiencing the daily life is awesome.

I found a nice group of Philly fans there too. A buncha expats would meet at the sports bar by the casino. That's where I watched the flyers hawks cup final

I'm in Granada, Nicaragua. It's literally the 2nd poorest country in the western hemi other than Haiti. I go out with about 40 bucks on me, i hide 20 of it in a separate pocket in case i get mecheted, and i still buy booze for everyone. the hardest part is pretending that their mony means anything. i'm good with it now, but a few months ago i was giving someone like 20 bucks for a 30 cent beer.

but look up granada, its amazing. i'm on lka enicaraguem like 5 blocks, but also 45 min from the pacific and a few hours from the caribbean.

Cool shtein

I learned that the lake is the 20th largest in the world and the only freshwater body that is home to sharks.

Also that timber is a huge business there ( wonder what species?)

And the NYT has given props to restaurants there. Have you eaten at that ciudad lounge?

Rome

I'm drunk in Denny's right now.  Not sure where but getting here was fun.

Hey Matt.  Don't get killed down there.

PhillyPhreak54

At first I thought you were Matty and I was like " they have a farging Denny's there?!"

MDS

lol me too

honest to good that might be rome's best post ever
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.
