I've never been to VT at all but I'd love to. I'd be all about moving to a place like that with a smallish quiet town with a colonial feel. My dream house is an old school joint with a huge wraparound porch.

it's funny that until about a week ago i would have considered that in a second, but i got a fairly significant promotion, raise & transfer to my home district office last monday, so it's not going to happen any time soon now.

austin is a fairly big city with a weird, liberal hippie core. it still has big business and the state govt and plenty of racist rich white people in the suburbs (sup, round rock?)

asheville seems like a liberal enclave that is of its own
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

I don't expect you'll find your way to any chain establishments.

no way....the food here is off the charts...especially the vegetables...it sounds crazy but I could live off the salads and nothing else in this place...had an arugala and beet salad last night....a new potato green bean take on a ceaser today and both were incredible...also had  a farm to table vidalia onion garlic mushroom and sausage pizza that was ridiculous...also had a shrimp and grits that I was a little weary about since seafood in the mountains is usually suspect but they might have been the best shrimp ive ever had...cam from the cackalacka coast the waiter said....which made sense since honestly the best seafood ive ever had is in the outer banks...also had a shrimp and scallop ceviche that wasn't off the chartgs but was surprisingly good for the locale

what are your familys places called tho....if they are downtown I may stop in for a beer just to check it out...it might stil be good because in the city here there are no real chains...so maybe by chain you mean a few local places they own....once ive been off the highway and into Asheville I have no seen a single chain rest of any kind
Outback which I'd never set foot in, and Bonefish Grille.  My mom's cousin and husband own those franchises.  Lou played CB for the Jets for two years back in the late 70's, but he looks like an O lineman now.  I've never made the trip, but I'd venture to guess they are on the outskirts of Ashville proper.

i just looked it up...it appears the outback is in a hotel on the other side of town right on the interstates and in the hotel district....its chain central over there...50 feet from it is an applebees olive garden and bww...and id put 20 bucks on there being a dollar store nearby as well

Ha,  not shocking at all, they seem to gravitate towards the same commercial properties.  I'd avoid them at home, highly doubt I'd ever go out of my way while on vacation.
