I think that counts how long you're logged in for....and I never really log out all day.

Nah, it counts activity.  If you don't refresh within a certain amount of time, it doesn't count the amount of time you're just logged on.

ive been trying to figure the forumla for that for a while.  It doesnt make sense.  GF must have a robot hitting refresh all night.  ha.

It's easy to tell if time has been logged or not.  When you look at the top of the screen, it shows by your avatar how long you've been online.  If you hit refresh, the numbers go up.  If you walk away for 20 minutes and hit refresh, they don't.  I don't know the exact cut off, but I think it's somewhere in the 12 minute range...if your account isn't active on the board for twelve minutes, then when it is next active again, the "time online" remains what it had been before you slacked off.
