I keep misreading the title of this as "pornography thread" and am obviously disappointed when my brain decodes it properly.

Mrs. Yeti wants to take some good pics of the deer that come up to our farm every night.  They are about 100 yards away.  She wants to buy a digital camera for under $200.  I told her she will have to spend twice that to get a decent camera.  Are there any decent "wildlife" cameras for under $200?

No.

From that distance you need a 500 dollar camera and a 1000 dollar lens.

And a threesome with a midget.

I bought one 5 years ago, great camera, I still use it.

At the distances you're talking about, a tripod would be a smart addition.

Diomedes

Or skip the tripod and the fancy lens...shoot the deer dead with a gun and then get all the close up pics you want.

F'n deer.

So my wife can just steady it on my shoulder.

The wifey picked me up a Canon T3i for my birthday..I've been playing around w it for the past few hours and its pretty sweet, but I have no idea what I'm doing..anyone know of a good site to learn how to use this thing?

Susquehanna Birder

Are you looking more for how to use that particular camera, or for technique info? If it's the latter, a place like about.com is a decent place to start.

There are quite a few blogs and forums I can point you to, as well.

DH

definitely both..I've toyed around w photography with a cheap digitals long enough, time to step up my game. I'm all ears.

Sounds good. First, that about.com site is pretty good for giving the basics with regard to technique, and it has a small forum (but the format of the forum sucks).

Here are a couple of other forums:

A couple of good books:

Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure is pretty good at starting basic and progressing at a good pace.
Scott Kelby's Digital Photography gets very high marks, but I haven't read that one yet.

There's also a nice list of books recommended by users on the Photography on the Net site. Link

And here are some decent blogs:

awesome, thanks a mil. I brought the camera up to west point today - gonna take some shots and see how they look, then take the same shots at a later date once I learn some technique, etc..
