That's stupid. What was the point of Two Face kidnapping Gordon's family if his character is dead. It just added dead weight to the end of the movie... I'm not buying it.

huh? he kidnapped the family to make gordon pay for what he believes lead to rachel's death.

he was killed as the result of batman trying to save the boy.

i think without the scene where dent holds gordon's family hostage the central point of "sometimes ppl need to have their faith restored" would be lost. it shows how far dent went to seek revenge. how far he went from what he used to be. if you end the movie with just the joker being caught it brings no finale to the character of dent. and nolan made this movie not with a sequel in mind but to have a self contained film.

Maybe I'm missing something but this explanation makes absolutely no sense to me. And hence, I'm still not buying it.

well in the comics dent has multiple personalities, has acid thrown on his face, has his abusive past revealed, becomes two face, and then a mob boss.

nolan definitely was not going for that two face. dents sole motivation at the end is to get revenge. the joker convinces him that while he kidnapped rachel, it was the "planners" and "schemers" like batman, gordon, and dent himself who led to her demise. he convinces dent that it was their fault. at the end hes out for revenge. kills maroni because he let the joker (mad dog) lose. the final scene has batman and gordon in front of him. he flips the coin for batman and shoots him. he flips the coin for himself (since the joker convinced him he was at fault too) and it comes up head so he doesn't kill himself. for gordon he wants him to suffer like he did with the loss of his loved one, so he takes the son to kill in case the coin lands on the burnt side.

he kidnaps only to draw out gordon and batman. not because he is going to become some super villain like in the comics. his arc and story ends when his revenge quest is finished. it fits perfectly for the movie because that was the jokers ultimate goal. to show batman and gordon that even the best of them could be brought down to his level of evil. that gothams hero (dent) could be turned bad. having dent die and then batman take all the blame destroys all that bruce was really working towards.
