My list:

1. The Godfather
2. Casablanca
3. Chinatown
4. The Graduate
5. Apocalypse Now (original version)
6. Raging Bull
7. Network
8. Citizen Kane
9. Patton
10. Gone With The Wind

Agreed.  Canned list.  You only forgot "Bridge on the River Kwai".  I'm sure that's #11.

My top ten comedy and non-comedy favorites that I can currently think of... in no particular order...

(I reserve the right to revise these lists as people mention other movies I'd temporarily forgotten.)

Comedy
1. Grosse Pointe Blank
2. State & Main
2. Caddyshack
3. Fletch
4. The Princess Bride
4. Animal House
5. Spaceballs
6. Office Space
7. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
8. Airplane!
9. PCU
9. Army of Darkness
10. Monty Python & The Holy Grail

Non-Comedy
1. The Usual Suspects
2. JFK
3. Primal Fear
4. Die Hard
5. The Shawshank Redemption
6. Fight Club
7. The Aviator
8. Donnie Darko
9. Independence Day
9. Back to the Future
10. The Departed

I know I'm forgetting some.

Yet another round of edits.  Phreak reminded me of my irrational love for "Back to the Future", and rjs reminded me that "Army of Darkness" is certainly a comedy.  I basically felt I had to bump either "Animal House" or "PCU"... and that was a tough decision.

It wasn't a canned list.  Those are my top ten movies but I would substitute Blade Runner for Gone With The Wind and omit Citizen Kane entirely if it weren't for the fact that Orson Welles created that movie when he was 26 years old.

He made arguably the best film ever at an age when most people haven't even bought their first house yet.

Again - what movie doesn't belong there in your opinion.  Several of them were included on almost every list presented here, so I supposed every other list is canned too?

BTW: JFK would put a speed freak to sleep.

I put the Usual Suspects and Primal Fear into the same sub category...good movies with great endings. That is if the last 5 minutes were any different, they'd be average movies at best. That said, I think the last 15 minutes of any movie makes up about 75% of the quality.

The one movie that I can see that reverse proves that is the movie High Tension. The first 70/80 minutes of that were just flat out excellent. The ending was one of the worst, and most forced "twists" I have ever seen. It was one of the few times where the end of a movie flat out pissed me off to the point where I then hated the rest of it.

Also, there are two different Donnie Darko versions out there...the theatrical release, and the directors cut. The directors cut SUCKS, and takes all mystique out of the theatrical release, and basically ruins what made it so good.

Meh.  It just doesn't seem honest that those are the 10 movies you most enjoy.  It's one thing to appreciate a piece of art, but that doesn't mean you want it hanging on the wall in your house...

If you think "JFK" is slow, then "Citizen Kane" should literally euthanize you.  "JFK" impresses me with how well it keeps my attention and moves, despite the length.  Ie: I fell asleep watching the first LOTR movie... in the afternoon.

ice grillin you

lol...says the guy pimping citizen kane and gone with the wind...two unwatchable suicide inducing movies

jfk contains the best ensemble cast of actors to ever hit a movie screen

I would bet there there are at least three movies on your list that you have never even seen.

The fact that none of you mentioned Magnolia in any kind of top ten list is a joke.

Also Dead Poets Society. Where the hell is that. You all suck.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Yeah, I'm big on endings.  It doesn't have to resolve all neat and clean, but it has to be interesting.  What good is a movie that can't end in a complete and/or interesting way?

PhillyPhreak54

2. Goodfellas
3. A Bronx Tale
4. Animal House
5. Die-Hard
6. Pulp Fiction
7. Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Another great point about a movie that was basically ruined by the hackjob ending.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?
